Colorado House Speaker Mark Ferrandino celebrates daughter's adoption
A Denver judge made official Wednesday at 9:24 a.m. what House Speaker Mark Ferrandino has known in his heart for a year: Lila is his daughter.
In Courtroom 2H, Juvenile Court Judge Karen Ashby approved the adoption of the 20½ -month-old, recognizing Ferrandino and his partner of nearly 13 years, Greg Wertsch, as her legal parents.
"There is not one definition of what a family does look like and should look like," Ashby said.
The proceeding capped a 3-year-journey that began when the gay couple went through foster-parent orientation classes with the Denver Department of Human Services in hopes of adopting a child.
