you could always count on encountering two hostile groups manning tables in the lobby of the Student Union:
The Communists and the Socialists. They hated each other with a passion. Never mind that this was during the time that Nixon and Kissinger were bombing the hell out of Vietnam and Cambodia. Never mind that Women's Liberation was a new term. Never mind that Civil Rights for all Americans were still on shaky grounds. There were far more important issues to address. Don't ask me what they were, I was neither a Communist nor a Socialist.
Any how, I've been called to adjudicate on any number of alerts in long threads in various forums and groups. I got to tell you folks, I've tried to go down the threads and figure out what the hell everyone is so upset about. You've got me. All I know is that all the sides (there may be more than two) are quite passionate that they're right and everyone else is wrong.
There was a massive flame war that went through the Lounge a couple years back. It'd sputter out, then someone would start posting that so-and-so shouldn't have been Tombstoned, then there's be more fighting and another rash of Tombstones. We lost a lot of good people that way.
So please, if I may paraphrase Lyndon Johnson, stop pissing in the tent and start pissing out!
