Allen West: It's absurd to tax the rich

http://www.postonpolitics.com/2012/02/allen-west-second-holocaust-ahead-if-america-doesnt-protect-israel-against-iran/

From the same article referenced in this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002356986

During the course of his speech, he was interrupted by someone questioning his stance on taxing the rich.

<snip>
“It’s not absurd to tax the rich,” said Tony Fransetta, president of the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans, Inc.

“Yes it is,” West said. “No it’s not,” Fransetta responded.

“You can tax people to 110 percent and it will still not make a dent,” West said. “Why do I want to ask them for anymore money when (the country) is not going to be fiscally responsible,” West said.
<snip>

It's absurd to tax the rich, so instead let's just tax the fuck out of the middle class and poor...after all, why should we let them keep their money if they aren't going to be fiscally responsible with it? If they were fiscally responsible, they'd be rich.

would be shocked. Overall, I bet it's more than they pay in taxes.

Llook at what it must be for a CEO of a military weapons manufacturer. It must be huge. How about people running or heavily invested in oil companies? Even if you just count profit from what the militarty and government uses. We pay for it, tax dollars going right in their pockets.

When you buy Homeowner's Insurance you are charged on the value of the home (same applies for your tax rate on your home). Our military and our social safety net, in its most basic sense, are forms of insurance. You would expect, even if taxes were directly proportioned on assets, for those with the greatest wealth to pay the most for insurance.

The social safety net is a form of insurance because people will not let them starve themselves to death. Without such a net, you will see anarchy and a destruction of the assets which you value.

That is it in a nutshell. Without any appeal to fairness or compassion in even a strictly libertarian let them die sense.

The argument gets even more bolstered by the fact that our spending on the military also impacts the wealthy's income far more because it allows us to police the sea lanes (and air) allowing you to securely invest in other countries or with the assurance of getting bottom dollar prices for goods from other countries.

Should 14% of your income be the maximum tax you pay for this level of security? I think not.

The cost of the Bewsh tax cuts is hovering near 2 trillion dollars since their inception.

It's not how many people there are, it's how much wealth they control. It's not how high the corporations are taxed, it's how many loopholes they can drive a Mack truck through to avoid paying that rate.

It's called "righting a wrong" and "long journey always start with one step".

Corporations rake in billions of profit - pay no taxes on it and screw us over. Rich assholes pay no taxes on their money either. We could solve the debt by closing loopholes and making them pay big time.

George Carlin was right - the rich make all the money, pay none of the taxes. The middle class pays all the taxes, does all the work. And the poor are there just to scare the shit out of the middle class. Keep them showing up at those jobs!

yup GOP before you ask.

SO he was going over all that, and why we need to lower taxes and all that.

Well, I asked him (coffee shop)... "if you are going to lower state taxes to effectively zero, and your state pay comes from taxes... who is going to pay your salary?"

Oh the silence was precious, so was the implication... suffice it to say that was enough for the folks who were hanging to every word he was saying to stand up, thank him, shake heads and leave. I know I did cost him a few votes that day.

I also know he TRIED to run against Boxer, (two or three who declared) and his career is mostly done with.
