The Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 on Tuesday to support the county's split from the state of California.
It's the first in a long series of steps to form the proposed state of Jefferson, which proponents of the effort say would bring representation to rural North State counties that currently are beholden to the whims of representatives of the more heavily populated Southern California and free them from burdensome state regulations.
We have to have government that's local, understands our issues and has empathy for those affected, said Mark Baird, a Scott Valley rancher who's also president for Scott Valley Protect Our Water and vice president of the Siskiyou Water User's Association.
Baird is leading the charge to form a new state from rural counties in Northern California and Southern Oregon, though he certainly wasn't the only voice in support of the move.
More than 100 people packed the supervisors' chambers Tuesday for the discussion on whether the county should issue a declaration that it wants to secede from the state. Nearly all those in attendance appeared to be for the move and about a dozen spoke in support of it.
Many proposed laws are unconstitutional and deny us our God-given rights, said Gabe Garrison of Happy Camp. We need our own state so we can make laws that fit our way of life.

(10,942 posts)Then cut off all support infrastructure that the populated southern part of the California and northern part of Oregon largely pays for. It would be cheaper for the counties that want to stay in their state to let the assholes go. Then when the assholes come begging to re-enter California or Oregon, charge them an enormous re-entry fee. One supervisor in that county has a working brain.

(12,660 posts)It's not a hippy/liberal "back to nature" paradise these particular people are talking about here.
This isn't the Bay Area/Tahoe/Napa or Sonoma Valleys with tourists, new agers, nouveau riche, technocrats, and environmental activism.
This is a old-school, dug-in red part of the state - logging, mining, and ranching - that still lives like it's 1899. They gets a lot of subsidies and resources from the state and feds they like to ignore, and have beefs (no pun intended) with the local reservations, the EPA, the Park Service and Dept. of Forestry to name a few organizations.
Many of these small valley towns don't accept "new, strange folks" moving in, and will actively gather together to drive out any person or family that doesn't fit in with their idea of "respectable citizenry". I spent a year and a half of my pre-teen life growing up in one of the larger "towns" near Mt. Shasta when my father took a job as a high-school teacher; they basically ran my parents out of town for being too "liberal". See, Dad taught history "wrong" - (not the sanitized, American Heroes only viewpoint the school-board wanted) and Mom wanted to (gasp!) work outside the home for real wages, instead of working part-time at a store or sell Avon. And they didn't go to any of the few local Churches, which was the final strike against them.
Fifteen years ago, I spent some time up there near the Oregon border supporting a three-month CAL-TRANS upgrade installation, and it hadn't changed any then.
I suspect that Mr. Scott Baird, like many of the supposedly "free, hardworking ranchers" really wants his own family plantation realized, carved out of federal and state land rights they had leased, where he can treat undocumenteds and migrant workers any way he wants, dam up rivers and run-off, and otherwise use the land he "owns" as he pleases without concern for the environment, the native flora and fauna, or the future. It's the "God-given" land his family had worked since they settled there, after all. He should be able to turn it into barren wasteland if it serves him and his family fortune.
But in the back of their brains, they have to (even though they don't like to) admit their "way of life" depends on the largess of the state of California for their actual infrastructure. The next time there's a a bad winter or spring thaw, forest fire, or if Mt. Lassen or Mt. Shasta goes, you'll see them run crying for disaster aid because they can't really support themselves.
This is pretty much an exercise in poutrage.
While they have a point about water rights (and water is a huge problem in California), creating one's own "state" does not fix their problems the way they would like to pretend it will.

(78,249 posts)like the vehicle registration fee was in the Total Recall.
Thing is, it was only put in place because repukes, like the one who represents the far north, blocked any and all attempts to raise revenue. (Aside: I actually did a leg visit with the guy once. He seemed pretty reasonable, for a repuke. Then on my way out, I saw a fundie book sitting there on his table.)

(12,660 posts)If they're complaining about that now, they haven't been paying attention to the Rim Fire.
I remember there was a particularly nasty fire in the Shasta area not too many decades ago. Of course, they blamed the environmentalists for the damage to "their" land during the fire. If they had been allowed to log enough for the profit like Gawd had intended, the area wouldn't have burned...
So, they think they don't need to pay taxes or the fire protection fee?
Magical thinking.

(16,191 posts)This is nothing new, and has been flaring up now and then for more than 70 years. Whenever they start getting upset about something, they start talking about Jefferson.
It got serious enough back in the 1940's that they elected their own governor and fielded a militia to periodically shut down the highways in and out of the area to exert their authority. Unfortunately for them, they chose to start their little rebellion a few days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Once the nation went to war, their rebellion folded and has never regained that level of cohesion and support.

(12,530 posts)That part of the state receives a great deal more assistance than it pays in. It would be fun to watch them flail, but not as much fun when they began starving. Stupid baggers.
