A child welfare agency in Norway has said that custody of two Indian children taken from their parents and put into foster care should be awarded to the children's uncle.
This would allow them to return to India, Stavanger Child Welfare Service said in a statement.
A local court will make the final decision in March, the statement said.
The children, aged three and one, were removed when child services said their parents had failed to look after them.

The Indian government said the children were being deprived of the benefits of being brought up in their own cultural and linguistic environment and it was important they should return to India as soon as possible.

Hmm, I don't know why India didn't argue that the children would best benefit from being raised within their own family rather than bring up culture. That seems borderline bigoted to me.

(53,866 posts)wants. its not in the least bit bigoted for india to make this argument.
infact if what the couple alleges happened is true, then Norway is being bigoted.

(32,047 posts)This article doesn't tell the full story, but I'm assuming these kids were born in Norway to Indian immigrant parents. I don't see any empirical, reason-based evidence that these children would best benefit growing up in India rather than Norway.

(53,866 posts)and indian parents have a right to raise children in Indian culture. not in a norwegians home.
want to raise your children in a particular culture doesn't require empirical evidence of superiority. it requires a logical evidence of difference in cultures, which there is.
indian parents want indian kids (even foreign born kids of indian descent) to learn an indian language. Would this happen in a Norwegian foster home?

(53,866 posts)i know conflating arguments is your strong suite but had the situation been reversed (indian family in india was fostering a norwegian child, because india determined that the norwegian parents were neglectful), i would argue the same thing.
there is a specific religion/culture/language that parents want to pass on to their kids, and they should have some right to do this.

(28,581 posts)We don't even know from the article how long the children were in foster care before they were released to a family member. Neglect and abuse can happen in any culture and the authorities should not turn a blind eye to it just because the child has parents who are immigrants.

(53,866 posts)they are being placed with the brother of the father. this is culturally appropriate for indians. if for some reason, i was a neglectful parent, my brother would be much more preferable to me to raise my child than the state/random strangers.
