When reading between the lines about how we have to teach Syria a lesson and to send a message it is truly about Iran (eg possible nuclear weapons development). That is the prize of the PNAC which they have been lobbying, championing and trying to pursue a war with Iran for the last ten years. The PNAC has done this out in the open. They have been very brash about what their goals are, and that is to exert American sphere of influence onto that region similar to what happened to South America. Look at what happened to South America, and look at what is happening to the Mid East. Ironically, the PNAC agenda falls apart because the Chinese and Russians are not playing nice as well as other countries of the world. It is clear that the PNAC agenda doesn't take into account that there are new powers emerging on the world stage, so their paradigm is naively built on the old guard. The Chinese have undercut the riches the PNAC cabal was hoping for from Iraq and Afghanistan. Libya? The instability in that country has shown that Libya may end up not aligning with the West after all is said and done. Even NATO countries like Turkey and Greece are starting to align themselves more and more with the Chinese than the United States, but you will never hear about that from the U.S. media.
What I am trying to say is the PNAC agenda to tighten the grip on the mid east is backfiring in a big way. There are three sayings we should all embrace from the Tao Te Ching:
Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power. If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich.
― Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching
We as the West are arrogant and assume we are better and that we know better about how to live as a human society since we have the majority of the Major Developed Countries of the world. And yet, the Mid East is in constant conflict because we meddle with their affairs when it comes to ancient borders, traditions and cultures. Instead of learning and understanding the Mid East's points of views we try to impose our will onto them.
If you try to change it, you will ruin it. Try to hold it, and you will lose it.
― Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching
We as the West have to accept that different cultures are different. But we refuse to do accept this, and we try to change their world, but we end up ruining their world. And then when we try to control their world we end up losing any support from them.
It happened in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is happening in Libya, and it more than likely will happen with Syria. The most difficult concept to accept as Americans, since American exceptionalism is ingrained in us at an early age, is doing nothing. It doesn't mean being isolationist, but it does mean we have to accept that sometimes:
Fill your bowl to the brim and it will spill. Keep sharpening your knife and it will blunt.
― Lao Tzu, Te Tao Ching
Our resources are not infinite and we will end up paying a high cost in the end IMVHO.

And all that effort may be all washed away with a vote in Congress to authorize military action against Syrian government.
