Shock and Awe --- Fooey!
Bombs seem to be mundane daily events in mideast conflicts.
There's nothing terrifying or intimidating about them to the warring powers.
The shock and awe may apply to ordinary people who get caught in the crossfire but they aren't part of the conflict and so don't count.
American leaders seem to think over and over and over again that our firepower is so terrifying that no one would risk incurring it.
But when it's used it never has any kind of definitive effect except to anger the adversary to attack the US along with their original enemy.
We've got to grow up and get over the idea that bombing other countries is the path to peace and harmony in the world.
If we attack we simply become another target and any humanitarian efforts we imagined will collapse into dust.

(7,403 posts)Announced by Melvin Laird in Vietnam. Not one of them did any good but it was like Nixon felt they had to be doing something so he sent the hapless Laird out there to announce still another bombing campaign. And perhaps the biggest blunder was when Nixon went with a wider war as he invaded the parrot's beak area of Cambodia and because of the destabilization that caused it was not long after that that Pol Pot came to power and depopulated the country with his killing fields.
My fear is not that we will repeat the mistakes of Iraq but that we will repeat the mistakes of Vietnam.

(43,049 posts)We really should have the UN, or some international organization, be a de facto police force for things like this, but that will never happen for a number of reasons-- not the least of which is no country willing to give up a smidgeon of its power or authority.
