It's not about the gas. This is a proxy war

Israel, Saudi Arabia, and others are trying to pull us in to fight against Russian, Iranian, and other sponsors.

They are using gas and horribly pictures of children being gassed to sway the emotions of people to bring them into a proxy war.

Dead kids are horrible, but there will be thousand more if/when we start raining death from above onto the country.

Don't let your heart override your brain.

You think Assad trying to stay in power is about gas? You'd be wrong. It's about a lot more than gas KittyWampus Sep 2013 #5

It is about gas, however ... natural gas. The UK, France, Italy, Spain, and Germany want it. Russia has it, and they exert a lot of influence on the European natural gas market. Our Western European allies want a pipeline through Syria to bring natural gas from Northern Iraq to the Mediterranean so that they can evade the stranglehold of Russia's near monopoly. Russia, obviously, doesn't want their lucrative natural gas market threatened, so they're propping up Assad (who has promised not to allow the pipeline). We're "subtly" pushing for Assad's removal so that the pipeline can be built to aid our European allies.

It is about gas. It is not about poison gas.

It's also about tribalism, tyranny and the beginnings of Democracy in the ME (whatever their version will look like).

It's about Oil, Gas and Israel.

It's about a great many things.

I have no idea why Assad wants to stay in power, but it will almost certainly be better for Syrian Christians and Alawites if he does.

It's going to be ugly.

I personally see no way around it.

The USA has to stay out as long as possible this time.
