8yr old bride dies at the hands of 40yr husband on wedding night

An eight year old child bride died in Yemen on her wedding night after suffering internal injuries due to sexual trauma. Human rights organizations are calling for the arrest of her husband who was five times her age.

The death occurred in the tribal area of Hardh in northwestern Yemen, which borders Saudi Arabia. This brings even more attention to the already existing issue of forced child marriages in the Middle Eastern region.

"According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), between 2011 and 2020, more than 140 million girls will become child brides. Furthermore, of the 140 million girls who will marry before the age of 18, 50 million will be under the age of 15."

It is reported that over a quarter of Yemen's young girls are married before the age of 15. Not only do they lose access to health and education, these child brides are commonly subjected to physical, emotional and sexual violence in their forced marriage.

One of the main issues is that there is currently no consistent established definition of a "child" that has been agreed upon worldwide. This leaves various interpretations within countries and little protection for those who are affected.

Establishing this age limit is among the top priorities of groups like HRC which was responsible for publishing the 54-page report “How Come You Allow Little Girls to Get Married?”, documenting the lifelong damage to girls who are forced to marry young. Most pro age-limit organizations agree that 18 should be the legal age for marriage.

In February 2009, a law was created that set the minimum age for marriage at 17. Unfortunately, it was repealed after more conservative lawmakers called it un-Islamic.

At least, not when those cultural practices harm women and children. We have to respect those cultures.

And, I'm a female feminist.

This kind of shit is beyond the pale, but telling a woman who wants to cover herself that she can't because, well, we're telling her what to wear, is equally as sexist.

When it comes to the point of child-rape and physical harm, yes, we should intervene. Worrying over what a woman wears is tiring.

My apologies if I thought that you were one to tell women what to wear from bikinis to the burka.

My point was, simply, that I agree that we should impose Western culture when it's clearly obvious that a person is harmed. However, DU is famous for telling women they can't wear burkas, while simultaneously suggesting women should be whores, depending on the market.

Precisely how is it you propose we change what other cultures do?

Yes, it's barbaric and awful, that isn't even debatable, but please detail exactly what your plan is to enforce our world view on people who do NOT share it.

Oh yeah, please do it with a method that DOESN'T just piss more people off at us and make us more enemies, we've got plenty already.

... are going there and "working from within?"

I look around this nation and see all kinds of injustice and economic unfairness and hatred and prejudice and hungry kids and multitudes of families homeless, joblessness, full time employees qualifying for Food Stamps...

I am more inclined to put my effort into cleaning up our yard first. I see almost nothing being done about that.

Maybe I've just reached outrage burnout.

I didn't mean to imply that we need to ignore our own problems; I was simply stating that education is a way to reach the young women in that culture.

If you fuck an 8 year old to death, your culture can go fuck itself if you hide behind it. Don't care who I piss off with that. Not worried about pissing off someone that fucks an 8 year old girl to death. Or his family or friends. Or his government.

that don't employ the use of bombs to get a point across. How about derision? How about calling this "culture" backwards and uncivilized? How about not ignoring what is happening to our sisters all over the world because we're not perfect ourselves? Should we just pretend it doesn't exist? Or just chalk it up to "hey, whatever gets you through the night and who are we to have an opinion on it?" And Heavens - how will we ever survive if the animals that support this kind of behavior get pissed off at us???

I mean, this is terribly objectionable, but if I lodge a complaint about this culture where women are subjugated, I may be a Western patriarchal type who just doesn't understand the choices . . .

Ok, that is as far as I could manage that sentence.

No, it's barbaric.

I assume this was an arranged "marriage" since I doubt the little girl was asking to get hitched to a 40 yr old. Setting that issue aside... at what age would it be okay? I'm sorry, but at 8, I think I'd be giving a bullet as a wedding gift. So... how old. 18? 16? ... 14? I'd really like to know what people's opinion is.

has anything to do with that. Will people use this story to foment anti-Islamic sentiment? Of course.

As for the comparison to men raping children here in the U.S "without a pretense of a ceremony", that's a spurious comparison. Or do you actually think that only happens in the U.S.?

There is just no words to fully describe how utterly EVIL destroying little kids' lives is.

On a somewhat related note I watched that 2010 Frontline episode about the boy dancers in Afghanistan. It was disturbing as hell.

What IS it about some men (and yes, it is almost always men) who resort to exploitative, degenerate behavior against those too weak to defend themselves?
