Will Obama announce the schedule for dismantling Syria's WMD tonight?
Or perhaps it has already been done and he is appearing on TV to tell us we are all safe!
Or maybe, just maybe, a riotous chicken-counting party has been going on for no compelling reason.
There is no "pause" in the process. Obama said that he would pause the preparations for military action if Syria disarmed. Not if they talked about it.
Russia is going to propose a 'sense of the security council' style statement, which may or may not pass. France will propose a resolution that is DOA.
And Obama is going on TV to drum up popular support for the Congressional resolution.
It has been an exciting a hopeful 24 hours, but nothing has actually changed, except a Senate vote being delayed, but since the House won't act any time soon (and since Obama doesn't want them to act any time soon if they're going to vote no) then there is no different landscape except in terms of expectations.
It will take a while, folks. And it is possible that what Russia will demand in exchange for their support is more than we will pay. (And that is not war-mongering, that is life. There are probably some demands we should not meet.)
This is a kind of thing thing one uses a calendar for, not a clock or a stop-watch.
Good wishes to the folks in charge. May they be wise in their actions.
