By VLADIMIR V. PUTIN
MOSCOW RECENT events surrounding Syria have prompted me to speak directly to the American people and their political leaders. It is important to do so at a time of insufficient communication between our societies.
Relations between us have passed through different stages. We stood against each other during the cold war. But we were also allies once, and defeated the Nazis together. The universal international organization the United Nations was then established to prevent such devastation from ever happening again.
<...>
No one doubts that poison gas was used in Syria. But there is every reason to believe it was used not by the Syrian Army, but by opposition forces, to provoke intervention by their powerful foreign patrons, who would be siding with the fundamentalists. Reports that militants are preparing another attack this time against Israel cannot be ignored.
<...>
My working and personal relationship with President Obama is marked by growing trust. I appreciate this. I carefully studied his address to the nation on Tuesday. And I would rather disagree with a case he made on American exceptionalism, stating that the United States policy is what makes America different. Its what makes us exceptional. It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation. There are big countries and small countries, rich and poor, those with long democratic traditions and those still finding their way to democracy. Their policies differ, too. We are all different, but when we ask for the Lords blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal.

No, the rebels didn't do it, and what's with the Israel claim? Also, I guess that last point doesn't apply to the LGBT community.

''What's with the Israel claim?''
See: Attack on military site was a 'declaration of war'
''Also, I guess that last point doesn't apply to the LGBT community.''
This one you got right. Putin is a homophobic cretin.
Also of interest in the article:
''Syria is not witnessing a battle for democracy, but an armed conflict between government and opposition in a multireligious country. There are few champions of democracy in Syria. But there are more than enough Qaeda fighters and extremists of all stripes battling the government. The United States State Department has designated Al Nusra Front and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, fighting with the opposition, as terrorist organizations. (and yet we are arming them) This internal conflict, fueled by foreign weapons supplied to the opposition, is one of the bloodiest in the world.''

(22,541 posts)He's only cooperating now because Obama made it in his interests to do so. Period. Maybe the use of force against Syria threatens his precious pipeline. Or Russia's naval base there. Or their airfield or SIGINT platform.
But until now he sure as fuck blocked everything the UNSC tried to do. He's a weasly bastard.

....The New York Times public editor Margaret Sullivan wrote on Thursday that the newspaper was approached Wednesday by an American public relations firm that represents Mr. Putin, offering the piece. At the same time, Mr. Rosenthal said, Mr. Putins spokesman had called The Timess Moscow bureau with the same purpose in mind. Sullivan did not name Ketchum as the public relations firm involved.
It wasnt a deliberate omission, Sullivan said when reached by BuzzFeed. I didnt ask the name of the firm when I talked to Andrew Rosenthal this morning.

(86,005 posts). . . it shouldn't surprise anyone when folks out here are cynical and even dismissive of any plan that Russia might offer . . . on our behalf?
There's an impossible arc between the president's presentation of this Russian initiative as a plan to avoid war, and the administration's own insistence from the beginning to now that the threat of military strikes is integral to their response to the chem attacks.
The most prominent broker of the administration's 'diplomacy' believes military strikes would counterproductive to the conflict.
Opponents of the president's initiative to war with Syria didn't produce Putin as an alternative; the WH did. Now, I suppose, folks who are busy hawking this pantomime of diplomacy are left to defend his credibility.
It's just amazing how his conclusion that the military strikes would be disastrous is being brushed aside by proponents of war by attacking his candor. Who brought him to this dance?

(48,181 posts)But I am sure that with your access to all the classified data available to Russia and the US you have a better sense of what is going on.
But if not Russia, who can we have a war with? Certainly we need a war. We can't get all worked up like this and get all excited and stuff and not toss our bombs someplace. Where would you suggest?

Lack of "access to all the classified data" that the US government has doesn't seem to be a factor when dismissing them as lies.
I mean, Putin is still pushing the claim that the rebels did it, expecting people to take his word for it.

(14,626 posts)It is confirmed that one of the loopholes in the president's anti-torture orders allows the continuance of rendition by the CIA, which consists of secretly snatching suspects off the street without any due process and "rendering" them to jails in other countries. Rendition is at the heart of the state secrecy apparatus, and should be of concern to any civil liberties, human rights, or democracy advocates.
But Human Rights Watch and, apparently, other human rights groups signed off on renditions in talks with the Obama administration, saying publicly that there is "a legitimate place" for the practice.
That's not a position that represents most human rights advocates, and deserves to be reconsidered in the months of drafting the new administration's rules. Human Rights Watch could have celebrated Obama's presidential order while vowing to close the rendition loophole. Instead, according to the LA Times, the proposal "did not draw major protests" among human rights groups because of "a sense that nations need certain tools to combat terrorism." [see LA Times, Feb. 1, 2009]

(14,626 posts)Simply because Human Rights Watch met with Edward Snowden does not make their support for drone strikes acceptable, or their organization honorable. They can not be trusted as a just arbiter in the area of human rights abuses.

(53,661 posts)I do like the last sentence of the OP-Ed. We are all equal.
As far as who put out the chemical weapons, I doubt that, but the threat to Israel is real.
Whether this is a covert threat to not support the Syrian National Coalition, a group recognized by the 22 nations of the Arab League as legitimate.
Losing Assad would place Russia at a disadvantage strategically or more correctly, economically and they feel they must use every means at their disposal in the PR war on this issue. They have, like all major powers as well as smaller nations, swept human rights under the rug when they feel their own people would lose anything.
I hope that he will carry through on working with Obama. The Russians are not stupid and could be a valuable ally in taking on some of the challenges that we face as a world in the coming days.
As far as the LGBT laws go and the history of Russian on other human rights issues, it needs to be fought. But it not all that Putin or Russia is about, anymore than Obama is, except he is correct on human rights. Russia is being called to account internationally for this hot-headed law.
Now to get to going with the rest of the rights being denied so many people globally.
Good article, ProSense, thanks for posting it.
