A Lot Of People Are Very Upset That An Indian-American Woman Won The Miss America Pageant

http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthis/a-lot-of-people-are-very-upset-that-an-indian-american-woman

They still do this pageant?

When her win was announced, Twitter immediately exploded with hateful tweets, with people calling her Arab.

Hey, Flyover Country, guess who are the one group of people (other than Jews) Al Qaeda wants to kill more than they want to kill you? That's right...

EDIT: my wife had an interesting point: someone with skin as dark as hers would never win a pageant in India, sad to say.

I always keep that in mind, and constantly reflect that not every "patch" in our quilt is cut square or properly stitched. In fact, there are many patches that are cut irregularly along both the warp and weft, and they are rarely if ever securely attached to anything, let alone woven in among the rest of us.

More's the pity for them. Life's better when you place other's ahead of yourself.

Mon Sep 16, 2013, 06:03 AM
Sep 2013

The Miss America pageant has crowned its first winner from an Indian background – an aspiring doctor who plans to use the $50,000 (£31,000) prize money to fund her studies – sparking a flood of racist criticism on social media.

"I'm so happy this organisation has embraced diversity," 24-year-old Nina Davuluri said in her first press conference, moments after winning the crown in Atlantic City. "I'm thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America."

But within minutes of winning the title, Davuluri, whose talent routine was a Bollywood fusion dance, was the target of racist social media comments.

***snip***

Davuluri, however, brushed aside the negative comments. "I have to rise above that," she said. "I always viewed myself as first and foremost American."

And was back in (Called up) later that year, can't remember exactly when. All I really remember is watching the build up on TV with my kids and them asking if I would have to go. They were freaking out and having nightmares. It really sucked for them. That's why I feel the only coverage we should have of war is the gruesomeness of it. Show a bunch of bloody casualties every night while America shoves food in their faces and pretty soon we aren't going to war so much.

I wasn't happy about fighting for Bush Petroleum but I had taken an oath and given my word so I reported and did my duty. Now they can fuck off and send their own kids.

I always wondered why we had it. But, I think the same way about professional sports too. The pageants are more sexist/patriarchal in nature. Probably not a very good role model for young girls.

"Flyover Country" is an ify statement imo. Many very good people to be found there. We do not want to denigrate all of them over the numb headedness of a portion of them.

The young lady appears very attractive imo. Good for her in achieving something she worked so hard for.

See, for some people those maps are a safety tool. People who are upset that their region is thought of as less liberal have a compliant that is several notches below those who are upset to be attacked by atavistic straights shouting slurs. 29 States allow legal discrimination against LGBT people, they also show up on maps.
People should make up their own minds if calling a State that allows discrimination against minorities less liberal than those who do not is really such a bad thing to say. Do some States have the right to discriminate with impunity so strong that to criticize or avoid that crap is in itself 'bigotry'? To reject homophobic cultures and laws is bigoted, but the laws themselves are not? It's just hard to follow the whole 'we get to make laws against you, but if you complain about that you are just a bigot' line of thinking. 'Let us abuse you or you are a bigot' just does not hold water well.

....and looked to be of Asian descent, she described herself as Asian American. I would like to know more about her also. The runner-up is always completely overlooked in the last moments: they announce the fifth, fourth, third, 2nd runner ups, then a long pause to build up the drama for the top prize, who is announced, then the first runner-up just disappears, never to be seen again. I loved it that the two finalists were both from minority backgrounds. There have been one or two African American winners, haven't there?

What I hate, is the haters writing ugly things on the conservative blogs. I don't think most of these people would say these things in public. The internet allows the real feelings of people to be discerned, unfortunately. Disgusting.
