(47,953 posts)Change is going to be very difficult. The problem is the gun fanatics do make gun 'freedom' their #1 issue, and turn out and vote. Only takes 10% or so to shift an election in most districts. Same thing goes with the anti-choice zealots. That zeal has to be matched by our zeal in order to turn the tide.

(171,076 posts)seems to be peetering out; we're actually getting used to these massacres, and that's intolerable.

(8,084 posts)Not condoning killing. but you know most selfish Americans only care when it affects them. They lack the ability to show concern for others

(4,835 posts)but I'll bet if the bankers were for gun control there'd be a special session of congress (over christmas if necessary) passing a law.
I guess none of the 'gun nuts' are mad at bankers or Wall Street criminals. Seems kind of odd that they're only mad at small children, movie goers, college students and naval yard workers.

There are relatively few districts in the US that can be swung with a 10% movement in the vote.
I wish that it were - we would have a much more rational government, but more than about 80% of seats are districted so that they are completely safe. Until gerrymandering goes, much of the US will remain hostage to highly partisan primary battles.

(11,155 posts)as often as Republicans try to vote down Obamacare...... OKAY!!

(33,345 posts)and regardless, a significant # of them agree with the GOP on this issue, good luck with this idea.
This issue is settled - cemented into place by the constitution, the SCOTUS, and gun lobby $. It will take decades to pry it open and inject sanity into the discussion. Decades.
I despair for this land.

(4,835 posts)We have to be realistic. Democrats in 'hunting states' have to have at least one campaign photo with a hunting rifle over their shoulder or kiss their seat goodbye.
Sentiment in this country has to shift before the democrats in congress come down on that side of such a highly charged emotional issue.
Mandatory gun insurance is the way to approach this. At least then you have another powerful lobby (the insurance industry) behind you. If it costs a lot of money to own a gun - the people who want guns so bad will start getting rid of them.

(10,362 posts)Then they could take more of our House and Senate seats. If it were a national effort, they might even use it to take the presidency.
Bad move. Stick to issues we can win.

(601 posts)But in reality, I doubt any member of congress would sign on for that. It would be catnip to their NRA-funded opponents. A guaranteed election-loser, so they'd back away from it like kryptonite.
I am beyond angry, beyond disgusted and frankly, beyond hope of ever getting sensible gun control passed in our country. No one in elected office has the balls to stand up, REALLY stand up to gun freaks.
