County board bans ‘Invisible Man’ from school libraries

nvisible Man” by Ralph Ellison is banned from the shelves of Randolph County Schools libraries.

By a 5-2 margin, the Randolph County Board of Education voted Monday night, at its regular meeting held at Eastern Randolph High School, to remove all copies of the book from school libraries.

The action stems from a Randleman High School parent’s complaint about the book. Committees at both the school and district levels recommended it not be removed.

<snip>

McDonald asked if everyone had read the book, stating, “It was a hard read.”

Mason said, “I didn’t find any literary value.” He also objected to the language in the book. “I’m for not allowing it to be available.”

If they don't want their kids to read it, tell they them not to. If their kids don't obey them, banning books won't help.

For years, popular public address announcer and Randolph County Board of Education chair Tommy McDonald has led fans in a brief prayer before football games at Randleman High School.

Friday night, he had to pause for reflection.

Someone — McDonald doesn’t know who — sent him an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) publication that defines the American judicial system’s attitude toward religious observations in public settings, including prayer before school sporting events.

Given that the name is so unique, in fact Google seems to think unique only to her anywhere, and it is the same county it has to be her.

I love being able to look up voter registration and voting history. I have used it to call out a bunch of teabaggers who claim to care all about politics, showing how many elections they sat out. It is nice to get some background on people. As well as expose people attacking candidates by showing they don't even live in the city limits of those politicians and get to vote for them.

would probably want every book in that library banned or burned if it didn't meet her standards of decency. I would imagine she does not have a close relationship with her children to where she could talk to them about varied subjects.

As far as mr mason, fuck him too.

It was one of three books from which rising Randleman High School juniors could choose for summer reading for the 2013-14 school year. The others on the list were “Black Like Me” by John Howard Griffin and “Passing” by Nella Larsen; honors students had to choose two books.
