The billboard, which PETA says it intends to erect near Vernal, features a bull elk with blood dripping from its antlers. It carries the slogans "Payback is Hell" and "Leave Animals Alone."
The ad is a response to a hunting accident that injured Bradley Greenwood, according to PETA campaigner Matt Bruce.
On Sept. 7, Greenwood was hunting near Matt Warner Reservior in Uintah County when he killed a large elk. The Lehi man was trying roll the animal over, when one of its antlers penetrated his neck, the Uintah County Sheriff's Office reported.

Winning hearts and minds?
On edit: Just to be clear, the following video has nothing to do with the above incident. I think it makes PETA people smile, though.

It's a fund raiser, nothing more.

(14,139 posts)Vernal, Utah is as redneck as the West can be. I don't see them winning anyone over out there--nor raising any scratch--not with a "Payback is Hell" message.

(14,139 posts)before the glue even dries. PETA will waste $5000 on a sign that no one will be able to read because the rednecks will blow it to kingdom come.

(31,182 posts)I heard they were dangerous. That hunter could have ducked into the trees, but maybe it was not to be.
As for PETA, they will do anything for free publicity.

(11,065 posts)Apparently you didn't read the OP. The guy got gored in the neck from the elk's antler while rolling it over after he shot and killed it.

(31,182 posts)Something tells me you don't spend much time in the woods.
TorchTheWitch
(11,065 posts)And went camping since I was a little kid. I chose the neighborhood where I live now because of the strip of public land that's all woods with a spring fed large creek... just got back from trampling through there in the pouring rain with the dog. My dad and my four older brothers were/are all woodmen, and growing up I bathed and washed clothes in a river of mountain cap runoff in NH every summer through high school, did white water body surfing, dove off a cliff into Lake Chicorua, spent a week sleeping in an igloo we built in the front yard, shot at trees with my brother's bow and arrows, learned rock climbing from the same brother and still go hiking with him and another brother. The only thing I haven't done in the woods is hunting since my father instilled in me a love of wild creatures including the most disagreeable ones. Oh yes, I've also shit and pissed in the woods more times than I can count, can make a fire with a spark even in the rain as well as make a smokeless fire. Something tells me you're just making shit up that you'd like to believe for your own convenience.
I didn't bother watching the video in the OP because I've seen it before and it had nothing at all to do with the story. Something tells me that you didn't think it was pertinent to mention that your comments were about the video rather than the story the OP was about. And instead of just mentioning your were talking about the video and apologizing for misleading comments that I'm hardly the only one that found misleading you decided to get all snide and personally insulting with making convenience based comments that have nothing to do with reality.
And now I'm off to set the mouse free that just got caught in my live trap.

And yeah, I don't understand the point of this ad either.

(14,139 posts)...while pretending that they're doing it "all for the animals."
And they know that there are plenty of horndogs who will ONLY stop and look at a PETA activity for 10 seconds IF there are some bare breasts.
I think it cheapens their message, which is pretty wacky to begin with.

Final score:
Words written/said about PETA = ~2,500,000
Total cost to PETA = ~ $0.00

(38,325 posts)When I was a kid most of the meat I ate was fish my dad caught.
My dad was never big on hunting, but we had relatives who were, and they shared.
And there were often farm animals in our freezer I'd seen alive. Sheep. Pigs. Cows.
My dad's grandparents were California dairy, my moms family was wild west cattle ranching. (My mom's cousin still owns the original family homestead along with the BLM grazing permits).
I've been hunting. I didn't like it. I've been fishing, oh my how I've been fishing, but that's what many in my family do.
Look, if I'm visiting family, I'm going to be eating animals. Last time a mess of my siblings and I got together we were eating mussels we'd gathered off a shipwreck at an extremely low tide. They were good too!
My wife is a vegetarian. I have a brother whose wife is a vegetarian too.
I don't eat meat often. I'm mostly a rice-and-bean person.
But I'm never going to go PETA on anyone. Meat has been part of the human diet for as long as there have been humans.
We also have three dogs who we try to feed as "ethically" as we can afford to. I don't expect dogs to be vegetarians either.
RebelOne
(30,947 posts)I did not make her a vegetarian. She does not like meat. I have tried to feed her meat-based dog food, but she will not eat it. She only wants what I am eating, which is definitely not meat. She prefers eggs and cheese.
hunter
(38,325 posts)I'd never scold them for that. It's what dogs do.
We had an elderly pig hunting dog we adopted from the animal shelter. She's passed on now. I miss her.
She got two good hunts in during her retirement with us but she never did understand why we didn't shoot the pigs she caught.
First pig, first problem, was I was holding a rake, not a gun...

The second story is just as funny but I wasn't there, it was my kid.
That was a dog who loved to hunt.
Our current old lady and very domestic dog is content to eat whatever we eat, but she's also happy with the two Pleistocene dog's meatier foods. I'll buy tripe and liver and other things that would otherwise end up as "meat by-product" in cheap dog food, throw it in with their dry food and it makes them happy. Let the people buying the ground beef and steaks bear the moral burden of killing the cow or steer.

(22,651 posts)you see how one billboard generates a ton of FREE press? I bet peta sends out a bunch of press releases to point out that one billboard.
kindof the way republicans point out one tiny crazy statement from a nutter like rush or palin.
