Navy rape case, sexual harrassment by council and very few care

Because of all the jabbering only 9 people have seen fit to comment about this nauseating case and I'm sorry I missed it earlier.

Jezebel

Well, this is completely sickening: the defense lawyers for three former U.S. Naval Academy football players accused of raping their classmate spent roughly thirty hours over the course of several days grilling the victim about her sex habits. The questions — which were asked in a public hearing — were intrusive, victim-blaming, and humiliating. The victim was asked whether she wore underwear to the party at which she was raped, whether she apologized to one of her accused rapists "for being a ho," and how wide she opened her mouth during oral sex.

Not surprised that I didn't see the other threads. Sexism and misogyny remain pervasive in our society. So many don't want to be reminded...

association should institute some standards and judge should penalize the attorneys for asking such unrelated questions.

These decide whether the case should go to courts martial. Because it is not a trial none of the protections available to victims in a court are available.

and an assault on this woman.

The judge (or whoever adjudicates in these hearings) should have stopped this line of questioning. It constitutes harassing a witness, and seems an obvious attempt to get her to drop the charges and thus derail the justice system.

Surely, no matter what the context, there are rules against that?

From the comments to the Jezebel article

Different forums (i.e. tribunals) have different rules. That's why it's very important in certain cases for the plaintiff to have the power to decide which forum should hear their case.

A military tribunal is not a civil court and it's not a criminal court. It doesn't give two shits about making the victim whole or punishing the transgressor. It cares about upholding military values, and fixing the rather large sexual assault problem occurring within their ranks is just not a priority.
