Navy pilot who shot down US plane in friendly fire incident in 1987 made Admiral....

http://battleland.blogs.time.com/2012/02/17/navy-pilot-who-shot-down-u-s-plane-makes-admiral/?iid=obnetwork

And you thought McHale’s Navy was cancelled back in 1966. It was one of the most bizarre stories Battleland ever covered. And incredibly, the perpetrator – the young Navy officer who mistakenly shot down a U.S. warplane 25 years ago – is being promoted to the rank of admiral (granted, it was an Air Force plane the Navy pilot shot down, but even so…).

(snip)

The triggerman was Lieutenant (j.g.) Timothy Dorsey.

At the time, the Navy ruled that he will be allowed to keep his pilot wings, but he never again was allowed to fly a Navy aircraft. So fast forward to 2012, and they’ve now made him a rear admiral...

- Well, there's at least one thing we can be happy about -- he didn't start a religion......

In May 1943 the U.S. Navy's USS PC-815, commanded by L. Ron Hubbard, conducted unauthorized gunnery exercises involving the shelling of the Coronado Islands, in the belief they were uninhabited and belonged to the United States. Unfortunately for Hubbard, the islands belonged to Mexico and were occupied by the Mexican Coast Guard. The Mexican government complained and Hubbard was relieved of command. link

When he went to Top Gun, he said nobody in the room could keep a straight face, not even the officers presenting. Observers from the air force however were said to have remained stone faced and practically shaking with rage the length of the presentation.

American military history.

He ran a ship aground when he was an ensign.

Imagine if no one had used any judgment as to the junior officer's potential, and just fired his ass?

No one died; and I'll bet they changed the training protocol after that incident (which happened during a training exercise).

That said, this guy's father was a flag officer; that probably helped salvage his career.
