The biggest mistake by Ted Cruz..

He "dissed" his colleagues in the Senate.

The Senate is primarily a special group of prima donnas. Their seniority is very important to them. The one thing that neither side will tolerate is for a "newbie" to come in and try to dictate what the rest of them will do. Cruz did not know his place. He pissed off a lot of Senators.

There's this movie playing in my head:

Little 5-year-old Ted Cruz enters kindergarten. On the first day he marches into the principal's office and demands more cookies or he'll burn the school down. Then he meets the principal who was at my school when I started kindergarten. . .

(I posted this yesterday, but it fits nicely with your OP.)

and you get that by earning it through putting in your time and energy raising money for your fellow party members.
I'll bet egotistical greedy Ted isn't razing any cash for his comrades either so that's another reason for them to cut him loose.

It may be a way to differentiate himself from the R contenders.

Never much cared for that "you should show deference to your betters" mindset.
