Maybe the ACA will have kicked in unless you have a scofflaw teabagger Republican as governor.

I finally got Medicare this year and it's a novel feeling, not having to be afraid all the time. I lost hope of insurance in 1987.

We've run out COBRAs to the bitter end.

Random bad stuff happens to people.

My wife was in our state's "high risk" pool for a few years, I did without.

We're currently insured through her work. It's not entirely adequate.

In true "First World" nations people don't have to worry about stuff like this.

I also owe a couple thousand to the lab that runs my blood on a regular basis.

All future visits are covered by Medicare and a very good Medicare Supplement policy.
