5 Coal-Fired Power Plants Closing

http://www.wtae.com/r/30572308/detail.html

PITTSBURGH -- GenOn Energy Inc. says it plans to close five of its older coal-fired power plants in Pennsylvania over the next four years.

The company, based in Houston, says Wednesday that tough new environmental rules make it unprofitable to operate the plants.

The plants are in Portland, Shawville, Titus, New Castle and Elrama.

Two plants in Ohio will also be closed.

Although it is a pretty good bet the (R)s will use this to attack President Obama.

http://www.genon.com/company/company-locations.aspx

Their Western PJM generating capacity is 7,139 Megawatts, of which the 5 Pennsylvania locations plus Avon Lake and Niles, OH are 3,232 Megawatts.

Total PJM generating capacity is 167,326 Megawatts. So this company is a fairly small percentage of the total.

Two closures are scheduled for June 2012, and the rest for 2015.
