The right wing is heralding this new poll showing the President's support slipping, but it's not all good news for the GOP since the last CBS poll...
Support for the Affordable Care Act is on the rise - 39% now approve, compared to 36% in July. The law's disapproval is down 3% to 51% from 54%...And of the people that disapprove of the Health Care law, 26% of them are Democrats, indicating that many in that group, including some here on DU, agree with the notion of government involvement in health care and are just dissatisfied that the bill didn't go far enough. Plus, 26% said they know "not much" or nothing about the health care law.
On trust on handling the economy, although Obama's numbers have dipped in overall approval, he now has a much larger, commanding lead over the GOP. In April, he had only at 4% lead, with 43% siding with him and 39% siding with the GOP. Today, he has a FOURTEEN point lead over the GOP, 47% to 33%. This is huge for us in 2014, as it looks like the economy will still be the main issue during the midterms.
In April, the GOP had a one point lead over President Obama over handling of the budget deficit (one of the few issues that Republicans had a lead in), at 42% to 41%. Now, President Obama has a SIX point lead over the GOP on that issue.
Democrats in Congress have a ten point lead over the GOP when it comes to approval, with 31% for the Dems and only 21% for the GOP. More encouraging news for us in 2014.
When it comes to what to cut in the federal budget, cutting the military budget is more popular (at 49%) than the other two options combined (Medicare and Social Security at 20% and 14% respectively).
Let the GOP praise this poll all they want....in the details, it isn't all good news for them!

(18,402 posts)Yes, in September, 2005, 3/4 of the way into the first year of his second term, Bush's approval rating was at 40%, and it would dip by November to 37%. But hey, who's counting?

(20,450 posts)that people don't know much about this law. They are angry at Obama because it's not a public option or single payer. Jesus.

(966 posts)I was a little bit surprised at the 26% number for disapproval among Democrats. That seemed awfully high.
I have a feeling that a lot of people across the political spectrum will start to like Obamacare when they see private insurance rates go down for most of the country and when insurance companies can't drop you or deny coverage.

(5,937 posts)Let's say the law really does ending effecting many Americans negatively in higher premiums, larger out of pocket expenses. I know that's a very generic question. Who do you think the public will blame and how will it effect Democrats running for office in 2016?

(13,186 posts)1. Pollsters ask "do you approve" questions that end up lumping the far left and far right into one group.
2. Many democrats who disapprove are too dumb to realize item 1 and answer wrongly.
3. Most of the people who disapprove have no valid reason for disapproving and simply disapprove out of abject ignorance or, more respectably, spite.
Once the law is in place for a while, I look for things to get better.
