Another prominent Republican has come out in support of same-sex marriage or at least, in support of one particular same-sex marriage.
Former President George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara served as an official witnesses Saturday at the Maine wedding of Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen, co-owners of a Kennebunk general store. Thorgalsen posted a photo on Facebook of the 41st commander-in-chief signing a set of documents for them at an outdoor celebration: Getting our marriage license witnessed!
No big statement from the ex-prezs office. His rep Jim McGrath confirmed his and wife Barbaras presence at the Kennebunkport wedding: They were private citizens attending a private ceremony for two friends.
In an e-mail from their honeymoon in London, Clement told us theyve known the former first couple for years and were thrilled they accepted the wedding invitation. Thinking about how monumental this time is in our lives and how blessed we are to be in their lives, they decided to ask them to really personalize it for us as witnesses.

(38,506 posts)He did something good for once. Credit where credit is due.
when he had a chance to affect change...and when he had some sway over his idiot-offspring in the WH, he chose to hide his light under a bushel..
This is the way most republicans operate.. They toe the party line in government, while acting much more liberally (sane) in their own family lives.

(6,896 posts)that is quite the notion. when he places Jeb in 2016, will he still be held harmless?
After 2000, he still has a noble card to play?
excuse me, while I go

(103,856 posts)but he did little to further real change when he had power, and now that he's an ancient old coot, the press fawns over his open-mindedness..
I don't think he personally cared much one way or another about abortion/gay/women's rights issues, but he had to acquiesce to his party's wacko philosophies..
Remember also , the Bushes were NOT given any grief over the fact that they were not all that religious, and rarely attended church, but the same media was (and is) harsh on any Democrat that is not a "regular-church-goer"
It;s just the damned hypocrisy that pisses me off the most..
The media "story" should be about how republicans always get the carrot & dems always get the stick.

(6,896 posts)thats real change for our country.
Did his best to finger some culprits,
unless that was some "other" George Bush
with the CIA, and Mohrenschildt's life.
I'd say he did enough, and far too much,
to be allowed any slack.
In this country, religious hypocrisy is no more
significant than the sun coming up.
He is the figurehead and locus.
Never even mentioned while GW took up stolen accomodations.
Wonder who can pull off that sort of disappearing act?
also- those relentless, unconstitutional attacks on gay marriage and equal rights
were tools of distraction, not oppression of a single community, but a way of
keeping ALL people unfocused on their own victimization by Bush and his friends.
in my honest opinion.

(5,714 posts)...who spawned an even (much) more horrible President as his firstborn son-you mean to say that he did one good thing here!
I guess that makes up for Iran-Contra, the CIA death squads, the illegal Panama invasion, the wars for oil that both he and his son conducted, the Willie Horton ad and the "Liberal" smear, Pat Buchanan's "Culture War" speech at the 92 convention, the utter disdain for common people during his Presidency...
People act like Bush Sr. is some kind of gentleman elite "old-guard, moderate" Republican. The truth is-he was just as horrible as Reagan was.
Oh, but he was "kinder and gentler"...

JFK is murdered in the streets of Dallas and he has no experience in the CIA, surprised to be made Director?
Oh never mind, this list is far too long to continue, and people obviously cant be bothered to pay attention.
