Missouri cops now using 80,000-volt ‘stun cuffs’ on prisoners

The Sheriff’s Department in Buchanan County, Missouri has begun using 80,000-volt enhanced handcuffs for prisoner transfers and some court appearances while dismissing potential safety concerns, KQTV-TV reported on Monday.

“It affects the muscles of the body and it doesn’t really affect anything else,” Captain Jody Hovey told KQTV. “Everyone says it affects your heart, and it does not. What it does really is it just sends a charge through the body that locks up your muscles.”

Hovey said to KQTV that the “stun cuffs,” as they have been called, are tied around a prisoner’s arm or leg and can be operated via remote control from as far as 100 yards away. His department is currently using only two pairs, valued at $2,200 apiece, citing “bugs and kinks” that need to be corrected before more are ordered."

box?

If you're going to do things by remote control, why not attach a set of handcuffs and "leg irons" to the prisoner--only they aren't typical handcuffs or "leg irons." They're cuffs with a superstrong wire--of the sort used to build bridges, say--that are on a retractable system, like a dog leash. To make the cuffs retract, use a remote control.

Give the prisoner enough "rope" so he can walk easily, and hold his papers, and scratch his nose, but if he tries to bolt, push the button and he's face down on the floor because his ankles and wrists are pulled together in the blink of an eye.

We can put a man on the moon, why can't we do something like this? Much less lethal, surely. If the prisoner falls on his ass and breaks his nose, it's on him, for bolting.
