_____________________________
Due to recent comments by Rush Limbaugh there will be pressure to remove him from the AFN airwaves.
If this decision is to be made it MUST be made by the AFN audience (the American Soldier) and no one else.
Please take this into consideration and go by what they want and not what the rest of the world might want.

(7,754 posts)Last week a young women testified to Congress about women's healthcare. The next day Rush Limbaugh responded by calling her a slut and a prostitute. He told her to post videos of her sexual exploits online so he and his buddies could watch them. He did this because this young woman had the gall to testify about women's health needs.
What miss Fluke actually did was tell the story of a fellow law student who needed the birth control pill in order to deal with a medical condition. The friend ended up losing an ovary because she couldnt afford contraception without insurance.
Instead of apologizing, today he upped the anti by saying that she was having so much sex that she couldn't afford birth control and that she needed to shut up and shut her legs.
My God, and you wonder why the U.S. military is having problems with women being raped. How long will you allow this kind of hate and misogyny to continue on Armed Forces Network?
What if this was your daughter, granddaughter, niece, mother?
It's way past time for Limbaugh to go. He is hateful and destructive to the nation and to the military.
Or do you at AFN agree with him?

(23,278 posts)told them my son had done multiple deployments, and AFR was his sanity. For AFR to actively support Limbaugh, they are turning their back on every female servicemember and every soldier's wife/girlfriend. I told them I was going to look closely at what other sponsors support Limbaugh's hate speech.

(7,754 posts)As a service of the Department of Defense, AFN does not advertise on Mr Limbaugh's program, offer products for sale, or sponsor any of the programs we relay to our audience.
The American Forces Network does not censor content and we do not seek to protect our overseas Department of Defense audience from hearing views with which they may disagree. Our mission is to offer program choices, which includes both the one-hour versions and three-hour version of various popular political talk shows.

Thanks for your support of the troops and for your interest in AFN.

Since when did calling a young woman a slut and a prostitute for testifying before members of Congress about women's health issues qualify as political talk? Since when is telling a young woman to post sex videos on-line for his viewing enjoyment qualify as political talk? Since when does telling a young women who you do not agree with to shut up and shut your legs qualify as political talk?
This is not political talk. This is misogynistic HATE SPEECH.
It is not acceptable in a civilized society. It is destructive and undermines our political process.
The women of American can only assume that since you continue to promote this speech, you agree with it.

(45,788 posts)Does al Qaeda get their own show? What a stupid illogical cop-out.
Have they cancelled shows in the past? Cancel this one. Why is it on there in the first place?
JSnuffy
(374 posts)... and the ratings and surveys up to this point show that the audience wants him to be there.
That may change but the source of that change must be the US service member.

Do you think that he would be on those stations even if he was unpopular or unwanted? Doesn't make much business or entertainment sense to me but I can see how you would be blinded by your emotions.

A more realistic number might be the usual 20% on either side of the spectrum with an apathetic 60% middle ground.
You probably don't realize the person you responded to was talking about the half of the population that is women.
Facts don't matter when you base your posts on emotion, now does it?
JSnuffy
(374 posts)I was referring to the population as a whole because it is idiotic to assume that all women will now turn against Limbaugh.
If you think they will, wait a few weeks and let me know how it works out.

I'll type this slowly so you understand.
Illegal Drug Addict called every woman who doesn't want to be barefoot & pregnant "a slut". That's the framing that is needed, since it is the truth. Illegal Drug Addict hates women, just like most of the Greedy Old Pedophile party. To them, women should be seen & not heard.
Unfortunately, Big Business owns 99% of the media, and thus this story will get buried as much as possible. Without Twitter & Facebook it probably would've "gone away" already.
... basically you are saying I'm right.
They won't care because the story will fade and go away? That seems to summarize your last statement nicely.
Your reply says I'm the correct one, since your reply amounted to "you're a big dummy".

It seems more like common sense to me. Maybe you could point out where the logic falls apart.
There is an answer and if you can't figure out I'd be glad to help you.

(34,138 posts)2. Rush Limbaugh has repeatedly denigrated and insulted half of the population of the United States with his misogynist views and opinions of women. This has gone beyond what is generally considered acceptable on the publicly owned airways.
3. Limbaugh is an admitted drug addict, not a good example for our troops. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rush_Limbaugh#Prescription_drug_addiction
4. Normal sane people do not go on diatribes accusing a young women whose only public exposure was to testify in front of Congress of being a slut or solicit pornographic videos from them.
5. Our armed forces have an acknowledged problem with rape in the ranks to the point that Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has called it "the epidemic" of rape and sexual assaults in our armed forces. "In 2010, an estimated 19,000 service members were raped or sexually assaulted by other service members. Clearly, more resources devoted to counseling for victims and training for prosecutors and judges will help." http://www.cnn.com/2012/02/07/opinion/speier-military-rape/index.html
* 3,158 military sexual assaults were reported in fiscal year 2010, a decrease of 2% from fiscal year 2009. Only about a quarter of these sexual assaults occurred during deployment to a combat zone.
* While sexual assaults are notoriously under-reported, this problem is exacerbated in military settings. The Department of Defense (DOD) estimates that only 13.5% of survivors report the assault, and that in 2010 alone, over 19,000 sexual assaults occurred in the military.
* Approximately 55% of women and 38% of men report that their assailant sexually harassed or stalked them prior to the incident of rape or sexual assault.
* Prosecution rates for sexual predators are astoundingly lowin 2010, less than 21% of reported cases went to trial. Of these 529 alleged perpetrators who were prosecuted, only 53% were convicted while 41% were acquitted or had charges dismissed. An additional 6% were discharged or resigned in lieu of courts-martial (RILO), which effectively means the military allowed rapists quit their jobs in order to avoid facing charges.

How much does Limbaugh contribute to an atmosphere that encourages rape in the military? If his attitudes are propagated among the military, it certainly cannot help reduce this problem.
Rush Limbaugh is not just offensive to half the American population, he is a danger to the capability and morale of our troops. "Entertainers" have been banned from the airways for fewer outrages than Limbaugh has created. Why should he be allowed on the air at all, much less being allowed to corrupt our armed forces?

Your canned reply in no way responds to my complaint about Mr. Limbaugh and his radio show. While I understand you may be getting numerous emails about his offensive comments, if you do not wish to respond to complaints, maybe you should assign someone to actually read the messages.
To reiterate my FIRST point:
Rush Limbaugh is not a political figure. His followers insist that he is an entertainer and have repeatedly insisted on that designation. His show is straight entertainment according to his followers.
Politics has nothing to do with my complaint. His blatantly offensive comments and promulgation of misogynist attitudes are the sole focus. As I indicated, these cannot be good for our armed forces since there is a serious problem with those attitudes already rampant.
This is a matter of the safety and security of the female members of the American military. Your dismissal of this point without acknowledgement is indicative of the problem.
I'll be sending copies of my communication with you to my Congress members and asking them to review the policies of AFN Broadcast Center.
Sincerely,
I'm copying the whole thing and over the weekend writing letters to send to ALL my Congress critters.

(34,825 posts)You, sir, and your entire outfit are cowards of the highest order. This is not an issue of censorship, but of common decency. I want you to think about the hateful words uttered by this filth when you go home to your wife. You go home, look her in the eye, and remember when Limbaugh called this woman a slut and a prostitute that he was demeaning ALL women, including your wife, daughter, mother, niece, etc. Good day.

(23,572 posts)I'm guessing he is popular and that many soldiers are entertained by his lunacy.
I think a lot of them could get very angry if he is taken off the air and he is popular.
I guess to me it seems that these men and women are risking their lives and they should be allowed to listen to him if they really want to.
Yes, I know he lies.
Yes, I know he is full of hate.
I just feel different about getting him off terrestrial radio then AFR.
You know they have the choice to put on Thom Hartmann. He is on AFR.
You know many of them sustain horrible brain injuries, mutilated limbs etc some don't even make it home.
I don't want to tell them they can't listen to their favorite radio personality.
Even tho he is full of s__t.

(4,847 posts)but, how many jabs has he taken at the CIC. How many fabrications has he told against the CIC; and how many soldiers now disrespect the CIC. When bush was in office and started a bogus war, putting our troops in harms way; limpballs was all over himself espousing the greatness of his leader-but not this leader. And, when his hero screwed up royally, he always found a way to cover.
In my book, he encourages disrespect for the position and he disrespects women who are serving in the military. And, the guy is an irrational fabricating fool.
I wrote I don't care what political party spokesman or woman they have on the air, just not hate radio. The troops don't need hate radio they get enough hate daily. Something like that to make it sound more impartial.
Gush is a hate monger and it is time for AFN to realize what harm that does.

(5,480 posts)They claim to want present diverse views. If I said any of the things about the Commander in Chief that Rush does on a daily basis I would have been severely disciplined.
The National Vanguard white supremacist group also has a radio show; will AFN start feeding that to the troops? If not, then they need to be asked why only *some* hate speech is allowed.
When I was stationed in Germany, we all knew that AFN was biased a certain way. We used to listen to Radio Moscow on shortwave, and knew that they were biased in the other direction. We figured that the truth was somewhere in between. But we *never* heard the type of hate that is allowed to be spewed on AFN by Rush Limbaugh.
