Governing Crisis Set To Escalate Dramatically - Dems May Link Debt Ceiling Rise to CR

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2013/10/02/the-morning-plum-governing-crisis-set-to-escalate-dramatically/

House Republicans are set to vote today on several measures funding parts of the government piecemeal, to reduce the political fallout from shutting the government, a move that’s being widely interpreted as a sign we may be headed for a protracted shutdown. Dems will reject these measures and continue to insist Republicans buckle and pass a “clean CR.”

In another sign Dems may well hold firm and not let Republicans escape from this predicament on terms more favorable to them, there’s now serious talk among Democrats of not accepting a GOP budget offering unless it also includes a debt limit hike if this shutdown crisis drags on.

Several Senate Democratic aides told me this morning that this is seriously being considered, confirming a report in Politico. As one put it to me: ”We are less than two weeks away from the deadline. If we were not having this shutdown fight, this is the week we would be moving a debt ceiling bill.” A second said: “It doesn’t make much sense to do a short term CR only to have to turn around and do it again with the debt ceiling.”

Well, that will be interesting to watch.

ETA: And then again, this looks like what Eric Cantor wants to happen, according to Robert Costa:

hello from House. met w/ some members near chamber. heard some interesting explanations re: Boehner's strategy. In short, the Ryan factor will do a post on this soon. basic pt-Ryan is telling friends in conf he wants a big debt limit push for fiscal concessions why this matters: Boehner listens to Ryan, and if Ryan is angling to lead/craft debt-limit budget deal, Boehner takes it seriously... and Boehner may feel more comfortable letting shutdown extend to next wk, when debt-limit talks are expected to start as impasse continues

That's a combination of four of his Tweets. Perhaps the Democratic idea is to get ahead of that and stake out "CR with debt ceiling hike only" right now.

If the Republicans have to back down on this issue, they will come to the Debt Ceiling debate with a base that's even more determined to see them stand up to the Democrats. In the Tea Party bases mind we are the aggressors (fortunately that's a pretty small part of America). So by combining the two we can avoid fighting the same fight on more dangerous ground in two weeks.

... that the radical House Repuglicans are determined to crater the U.S. economy and the federal government.

In their twisted minds they believe that even if they are responsible for the crisis, ultimately Pres. Obama will be blamed ("it happened on his watch&quot and that he will finally and fully be discredited and delegitimized as President.

Yesterday I thought that maybe this mess would be over in a few days, that the Tea Party Repuglicans in the House would find a way to pass a clean Continuing Resolution.

This morning I am beginning to believe that there is in fact a harding of the extreme right-wing not only in the House, but around the nation.

I think the radical Repuglicans and Tea Party-types see an economic crash as a way for some kind of coup against the President ... they don't know how, but chaos is a tool they can exploit to take power.

I've watched this shit for 50 yrs. Their will is forged steel, and they see anyone to the "left" of Reagan as weak, cowering and ready to acquiesce. This outlook underwrites All. When the Democratic Party understands this and begins to act like a Real party, then they can begin the long-term struggle to smash iron plates, knock out rivets, and torch-cut steel away from the far right. Cowing to corporate interests doesn't make it.

It doesn't even get you in the game.
