Shutdown Backfires: New Poll Shows Democrats Opening Big Midterm Lead 43-34by Sarah Jones at Politicus USA

"SNIP............................
A new Quinnipiac poll shows voters picking a generic Democrat over a generic Republican 43% to 34%, which they point out is the widest Democratic margin measured so far.
Asked If the election for the U.S. House of Representatives were being held today, would you vote for the Republican candidate, or for the Democratic candidate in your district?
The last time Republicans were almost this low was in April, but they managed to damage the Democratic brand with the summer of fake scandals.
Speaker John Boehner tried to warn House Republicans to no avail, and he continues to try to impose reality upon the newbie Tea nihilists today, warning them that they could lose their majority in 2014 as a result of shutting down the government.

Sad. Very sad.

(62,444 posts)We already know that more Americans voted Democratic to elect the current house with its Republican majority.
There is no nationwide race between "generic" Democrats and Republicans.

(58,459 posts)building up, at some point the curtain will be pulled back too far and the Republicans won't be able to turn it around in time using B.S. scandals.

(62,444 posts)That widens the margin, and doesn't do a god-damned thing in Teamanderville.
It would be great if someone would do some measurements in districts that actually matter, instead of a meaningless national poll.
It has long been true that everyone hates Congress, and loves their representative. That hasn't changed for decades.

(58,459 posts)that serves to depress Republican voter turnout is a good thing.
Furthermore "Teamanderville" is not immune to strengthening or weakening, being upset with the Republican Congress to the widest margin ever implies that perhaps "Teamanderville" have moderated or are moderating in their views in regards to the shutdown as well, particulary as the consequences become more apparent.

(12,335 posts)Even in some extremely gerrymandered districts, with tons of money poured in by the Koch Partiers, the Republicans didn't win by much.
I also think this poll is significant because Democrats will be highly motivated to vote, especially in states where there are idiots like Tom Corbett in the Governor's seat. Hell, he's so unpopular in Pennsylvania right now that the Republicans don't even want him.

(2,397 posts)But as I've said here before, we have to show up next year. We can't sit on our hands. You just have to tell yourself, I'm going to help people vote. If you help 10-20 or 50 people vote, then they might help another 20-50 people vote. And you can't forget women are pissed with states passing restrictive abortion laws. So the potential to have a big turnout is there. We just have to be the catalyst to make sure it happens.

(62,444 posts)I live in Delaware. Both of our senators and our sole congressperson are D, as is our governor and our state legislature.
I'm supposed to help people push the D button with more gusto?

(50,000 posts)There are districts in the US where this may actually help GOPers. There is a lot of crazy out there.

(7,412 posts)We live in a constant stream of new information, 13 months is an eternity.
The teabaggers and many independents will get fired up about immigration reform between then and now. Add another weak scandal or two. Insert some other big event like something in Syria or Israel bombing someone. This will be a distant memory unfortunately, especially if they end it this weekend (which I expect) and no real permanent damage materializes, most people will move on and simply not care about this.
The furloughed federal employees will probably get back pay for the days the didn't work, they'll probably be rooting for another free vacation the next go round j/k (I'm furloughed myself this week, have gotten tons of stuff done around the house).

(11,996 posts)You have to look at the races district by district to see whether those numbers would be at all indicative of an actual election.

Oh, the hurt fee fees we are going to have to watch here in a week or two from the GOP! This was supposed to work!
At the risk of sounding like an ad, my phone company is Credo, and they have a petition going - for every person who signs it, they are going to send John Boehner a pacifier - up to 100,000. I couldn't even believe it when I saw the page. But I signed up! If you want to join in on the fun, you can probably find it by searching.
The sad thing is, though, I'm afraid it's going to get worse before it gets better. That looming debt ceiling worries me. But there is no better time to keep being the adults in the room. The voters will see.
