General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsYesterday afternoon as I was driving eastward away from Nashville along Hermitage Ave.
which becomes Lebanon Pike, 94.5 "The Hippy Station" was playing the song "Close To You" by "The Carpenters"
I was relaxed and enjoying the music when a White Pontiac Lemans traveling at a high rate of speed, faster than everyone else on the road, suddenly veered directly in front me, I slammed on my brakes thinking we were about to have a head on collision.
The other car couldn't have come closer to me, veering off the road directly in front of my car running through a telephone post (I think) turning it in to toothpicks, only a third or less of the post was left hanging by cables or wires.
The vibration was so strong in my car that I initially thought he had clipped my right front passenger side.
His car kept going another 100 feet or so in to a ditch hitting another post and his engine caught fire.
I pulled my car over to the side of the road and along with another 10-15 men ran over to his car in an attempt at getting him out.
People were coming out of nearby businesses and other cars and we started yelling for them to bring fire extinguishers, to which several people did.
We were able to put the fire out, but the driver's side door was so damaged that even with a crow bar we couldn't open it, and the inside of his car was filling with toxic smoke.
Someone brought the short length of a water hose and it was held to the semi-conscious man's mouth so that he could breathe, it was so bad, we were even choking on the smoke.
After a few minutes, the police, fire trucks and an ambulance arrived on the scene and they used the "Jaws of Life" to extricate the man.
They were putting him on a stretcher when I left and I don't know what happened to him or what caused him to speed so fast and veer his car, drinking alchohol, heart attack, falling asleep at the wheel or just driving too fast to make the curve.
When I inspected my car it had not been hit but it couldn't have been "closer to me" without actually hitting my car.
Perhaps the music and the event were just a cosmic coincidence but there have been quite a few occasions when while driving and going over a decision, previous argument with someone or a debate in my mind as to a decision to make, that a song was played which seemed to indicate an obvious answer.
This was however the most dramatic occasion when a song and real life seemed to mesh seemlessly.

(58,425 posts)They don't always play Hippy Music despite their name, but mostly it's good stuff.

(26,116 posts)Heard stuff I hadn't heard in decades. "Chicka Boom"
Uncle Joe
(58,425 posts)and I forgot the name of the song but it was a rah rah type Vietnam Song and this seemed the opposite of Hippy to me. They only played that song once that I've heard.
One other point about the Hippy Station they get their weather reports from the local FOX station, so I was wondering if they were trying to co-opt the name "Hippy."
The positive of that is Hippy has obviously become hip again, but the negative is in them turning it into something which it was not.

(4,876 posts)and the drivers there are... not... good. Glad to hear you were ok. It sounds to me like you guys have saved that man's life! All in all a decent, if scary as hell, experience.
2 quick thoughts.. First I love Nashville, I was there during the floods and while I have had serious political arguments with many people there, no one asked if you were a Democrat or a Republican if you were offering or needing help during that disaster. When the chips are down all divisions are tossed out the window. Great place, Great people.
The other thing is radio. I sure do miss the days when there were actual DJ's who played what they wanted. I experienced the "perfect song at the perfect moment" many many times when I was younger. But back then there were no playlists, way fewer commercials, and DJ's who really cared about what they were playing. You are lucky to have a "hippie" station.. Most of Denver radio is crap.

But as I posted above in response to Lars, they do play mostly good music, it's my favorite radio station, however keep an eye on the ownership and their playlist so the term "Hippy" doesn't become co-opted.

I have to be in the right kind of mood but it's possible you'd hear me belting out the Carpenters in my car... especially on long highway drives.
Uncle Joe
(58,425 posts)I was more nervous running up to his car when the engine caught fire, thinking the gas tank might explode or something.
I always loved the Carpenters, Karen died too young.

(27,670 posts)Their meaning is not always apparent at first, though. When I recognize something as being a sign, I open up right away to my surroundings for the meaning of the sign and stay aware until the meaning is clear. I have lived a large part of my life out in the natural world, where distractions are minimal, and have learned that it is very prudent to acknowledge signs.
Glad you are OK, Uncle Joe, and nice job of clearly reporting events.
Has a relevant song ever played at such an amazingly perfect time that it made you shake your head and laugh at the "coincidence"?

once I was listening to AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" when I got pulled over for having expired tags, and I was only two blocks from my home.
Edit for P.S. To make matters worse, my car battery died after he gave me the ticket, the police officer had to jump me off.
Edit for double P.S. If they play H2H on the radio, I don't listen to it anymore and after thinking more about it, I decided to remove the link of that song from this post.
Thanks for the good wishes and peace to you, Zorra.

(58,425 posts)I couldn't live with myself if I had left or did nothing and he burned alive or died of smoke inhalation.
As I posted in the OP there were ten to fifteen other people running to the car as well, that kind of inspiration made the task easier.
Sometimes you never know who your friends are.

(15,555 posts)Karen had the most beautiful voice and I played that album over and over again.
Glad you're OK and you're an angel for stepping up to the plate to help the driver. Not everyone would.
Also, thanks for all the great memories of music from my youth. It so defined our generation. I've had many serendipitous moments where songs were playing on the radio at an appropriate time.
Uncle Joe
(58,425 posts)There is most defintely a cosmic or connected feeling when those serendipitous song listening moments happen.
This has happened to me many times as well, most of the time it's when I'm actively engaged in mental thought over an intense decision, searching for an answer to a debate or argument, recalling a memory from long ago, or having just experienced an external event good and bad and the song matches up perfectly.
Thanks for the well wishes, llmart and peace to you.
