"If a baby can cry at Walmart then I should be able to smack it."

I actually heard this comment made at Walmart tonight by a college age woman, with her (possibly) boyfriend shaking his head in agreement. The baby in question was with its mother in the pharmacy line, crying with a hand on its ear.

Children, crying in public, threats of violence, Walmart shoppers. Let the flames begin!

when I was a toddler. Seems I had a penchant for jumping out of the stroller and landing on my head or running into traffic. Of course, that was in the 40's, long before the modern safety equiment available to today's parents. I can remember wearing the harness, and didn't really mind it, as it afforded me more freedom than being led around by the hand.

I understand their use conditionally; I just see way too many parents that use them as a means to facilitate their own negligent parenting. More than I see use them appropriately. The example I usually use to demonstrate this is the absentee mother when I was working at Starbucks who was drinking her latte and gabbing on her phone while her son was winding his way around the table and his neck throttling himself. When I tried to point this out to her, she waved me off...then got pissed when I cut the tether around her blue-faced munchkin. "Now how am I supposed to enjoy my latte? You owe me a new child harness!"

I accused her of having her having her priorities wrong and point blank told her I'd let them fire me before I bought her a new leash.

More than outlawing them, I'd like to see the implementation of substantial penalties for their misuse. I'm an extremist though, I confronted a woman and called CPS on her for slapping her 5ish daughter in the face in a supermarket. She called me bad names when the police arrived and I told them not only would I testify, I hoped they took her kids away.

Shaking one's head in agreement, I mean.

No. One nods in agreement.

OK so even worse, for me, is the disconnect I feel when I see someone say something like, "But I love him/her soooo much", while shaking their head in what I perceive to be the negative.

If I had the sound off at that moment, I would naturally assume that the person had just said, "I don't really like bananas", or something.

I'm such a pain in the ass. Verbal and non-verbal have to match, for me...

when I write a post like this. I risk lectures from people about "English is a living language and you have to stop imposing your narrow views on it".

Constant misuse of the language is one of the major problems plaguing humanity and is an impediment to solving problems. Orwell put his finger on the issue with Newspeak (which is now identified as "doublespeak", a term Orwell never used in 1984), a problem we see and hear 24x7 in the media.

The problem is not unique to the Right, but I get a lot of grief from people when I point out that "politically correct speech" is doublespeak for doublespeak.

What the hell is it? Are people now supposed to put duct tape over their children's mouths when shopping so that assholes are not offended by a baby crying? And then there are the road rage people we now have to avoid. The idiots that are now running our country. The ones that can't stand dogs that think nothing of killing a family pet. And of course the asses that think everyone should be armed and the way to settle every difference of opinion is by shooting the person that does not agree with you. then I should be able to smack it. Unfortunately, had I been there, that's probably exactly what I would have said, too.

Baby in the pharmacy line, crying with a hand on its ear. Hmmmm... I'm not a big fan of babies, myself, especially the crying ones. But, at least I wouldn't consider smacking one, particularly one that appears to be suffering from an ear infection, and whose mom is waiting to get some medication for it. I'm all for parents taking their screaming kids out of the store, but sometimes exceptions need to be made. Sheesh.

Those things happen. No reason for anyone to threaten like that young woman did.

and live life only for themselves. My advice to them? "Don't have children, they'll just get in the way of YOU."

Maybe then they'll save any potential future offspring from their fucked up issues, and society in general from that legacy.

In my younger days society mostly turned a blind eye to wife beating, daughter molesting, child beating and bullies of all types.

We don't put up with those shenanigans anymore, nor discrimination - which gets called out more times than not. While the internet and cell phones do tend to put us all in our little cocoons it also spreads lots of sunshine on the things that could be done in secret.

There are always going to be thoughtless or narcissistic people but really I think overall as a society we are far more sensitive to mistreatment of the people in our community and around the world.

97. I agree the internet helps expose the good and the bad. Internet is the great equalizer, love it!

We do have very good & decent people everywhere.

On the flip side though evil really does walk the earth. It's terrifying how much bad just one person can do in todays world. They avoid exposure and take FULL advantage of the internet.

awhile back my partner and I were in a store... there was a young woman shopping and her young baby was just screaming... my maternal instincts went into hypermode and I approached her nicely and offered to hold her baby while she shopped... my partner looked at me like I was nuts and to this day still makes fun of me as a potential babynapper...

If you have two shopping carts of stuff and decide to begin to write your check when the last item is scanned......We should be able to smack you

If you get in the express line and have a fistful of coupons, half of which are dubious.....We should be able to smack you.

If you throw a hissy fit because the elderly lady in front of you is not moving her items into the cart and off the conveyor belt fast enough......We should be able to smack you

If you keep ten people waiting in line while you wait for your slow ass kid or significant other to fetch a last minute item.....We should be able to smack you

If you are complaining about the person in front of you using SNAP benefits without knowing a single fucking thing about their living situation.....We should be able to smack you

And if you are in line at a pharmacy counter behind a mother with a crying baby who has an obvious health issue and you don't offer a word of support or an offer of help or just shut the fuck up because, you know, sick kids scream.....We should be able to smack the wholly fuck out of you.

It saddens me to see how much people hearts have grown cold.

Your normal I'm #1 attitude for college kids, I know at a college kid in the 80's I felt the same way.

Now at a parent of two crying kids bothers me about as much as a dog peeing on my tires. You learn to tolerate both as you mature and realize there's other people in this world.
