Miriam Carey Thought Obama Was Watching Her

this is awfully sad. Carey was deeply delusional.

The woman killed by police in Washington, D.C. yesterday following a car chase from the White House to the U.S. Capitol underwent a mental-health evaluation last year, CBS reports. As previously noted, 34-year-old Miriam Carey was believed to be suffering from post-partum depression. Her boyfriend contacted police about her condition in December, when she told officers in Connecticut "that she was a prophet, that President Obama would place the city of Stamford under a 'lockdown,' and that he had her and her residence under electronic surveillance."

Despite the incident, she was not known to the Secret Service before yesterday, according to CBS.

CNN reports that investigators found the schizophrenia and bipolar medication Risperidone at Carey's Stamford apartment, as well as the antidepressant Escitalopram and "a letter addressed to the boyfriend ... [that] appeared to contain white powder."

It's also common enough that we all know what "tinfoil hat" means.

This very sad disease manifests itself in the symptom of delusion. Why does the media need to shine a light on the symptom ? When a notable person contracts lung cancer, does the media report that so-and-so has spent the last two weeks vomiting blood? The answer is no. They need to approach the brain disease of schizophrenia in the same way. I doubt they ever will.

I've worked with people who suffer the same kinds of delusions that Ms. Carey was evidently suffering. What they pick up and add to the patchwork of delusion, is hard to fix in any kind of rational systematic frame of beliefs. I truly doubt that Glen Beck or any other wingnut had any influence on her in the manner you think. With people who are inhabiting this frightening delusional structure "whipping up viewers" is irrelevant.

Mental illness it also contribute and drive these poor souls to listen to the right wing. Yesterday was listening to Randi and she played the segments if becks radio show where he is pretty much saying gov is coming for them and they needed to be prepared to aim and shoot.

She's been discussing right wing radio hated for a week and playing all the garbage they spew.

They should be taken off the air. It's irresponsible and dangerous to have these ppl on radio.

none. zero. so you're speculation is absurd. also the fact that Ms. Carey was black makes it a lot less likely, as the audience for Beck etc, is almost entirely white.

8. A Review of Postpartum Depression

Abstract

Postpartum depression (PPD) is an irritable, severely depressed mood that occurs within 4 weeks of giving birth and possibly as late as 30 weeks postpartum. Manifestations include crying spells, insomnia, depressed mood, fatigue, anxiety, and poor concentration. Patients may experience mild, moderate, or severe symptoms. Many psychosocial stressors may have an impact on the development of PPD. Recent studies conclude that the majority of factors are largely social in nature. The greatest risk is in women with a history of depression or other affective illness and in those who have experienced depression during past pregnancies. Women with significant risk factors should be followed closely in the postpartum period.

The severity of symptoms and degree of impairment guide the approach to treatment. Treatment should begin with psychotherapy and advance to pharmacotherapy if needed; however, many patients benefit from concomitant treatment with both psychotherapy and medication. Common forms of psychotherapy include interpersonal therapy and short-term cognitive-behavioral therapy. Postpartum depression demands the same pharmacologic treatment as major depression does, with similar doses as those given to patients with nonpuerperal depression. It is essential to use an adequate dose of antidepressants in a duration sufficient to ensure complete recovery. Mothers should continue medication for 6 to 12 months postpartum to ensure a complete recovery.

Inadequate treatment of depression puts women at risk for the sequelae of untreated affective illness, and the depression may become chronic, recurrent, and/or refractory. Family physicians are key players in the detection and treatment of PPD owing to the nature of the disease and the tendency for new mothers to negate their feelings as something other than a treatable psychiatric illness.

snip* Postpartum psychosis is a very rare occurrence2 (1–2 per 1000 deliveries) and has clinical features including mania, psychotic thoughts, severe depression, and other thought disorders. It is a psychiatric emergency and requires referral and hospitalization.

Washington (CNN) -- Authorities searching the home of a Connecticut woman who rammed barricades and led police on a chase near the U.S. Capitol found discharge papers from a 2012 mental health evaluation that listed prescriptions to treat schizophrenia and other mental disorders, a law enforcement source briefed on the investigation said Friday.

The woman, identified by law enforcement sources as Miriam Carey, 34, died after police shot her.
Earlier, sources said investigators found medications, but that proved later not to be accurate.
Carey's boyfriend told police in December that she appeared to be delusional, believing that President Barack Obama had placed Stamford, Connecticut, where they lived, under lockdown and that her home was under electronic surveillance, a law enforcement source involved in the investigation said.
