Obama Couldn't Make The Asia-Pacific Economic Summit So China Grabbed The Limelight

China took centre-stage on Monday as Asia-Pacific leaders opened an annual economic summit in the shadow of global growth clouds that are darkening by the day with the US government paralysed by infighting.

...

China is involved in talks on a trade agreement grouping 16 East Asian nations just as Washington's rival "Trans-Pacific Partnership" (TPP) of 12 countries appears to be running into trouble.

While sympathetic to Obama's political plight, the leaders of US allies in APEC such as Singapore expressed disappointment that he had been unable to throw his presidential weight personally behind the TPP and Washington's stop-start "pivot" towards Asia.

1. That's something to consider. The TPP looks pretty awful, but what are the Chinese throwing up?

Given their record on human rights and the environment I lack confidence that it would be much better.

4. News Analysis: APEC to play major role in shaping FTAAP

Earlier, Regional Comprehensive Partnership (RCEP), which groups the 10 ASEAN nations, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and India, just ended another round of negotiation in Brisbane, Australia.

At the East Asia summit held in Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia last year, its 16 members announced the start of negotiations, which cover such areas as trade of goods and service, and investment protection. They set the goal of reaching an agreement by 2015, which coincides with the deadline for ASEAN Economic Community.

Once established, the RCEP, with a population of 3.4 billion and 30 percent of the global economy, will become the largest free trade area in the world.

The future development of these major free trade negotiations will have direct impact on Free Trade Agreement of the Asia Pacific(FTAAP), a proposed mechanism for regional economic integration and long-term economic growth in Asia and Pacific and other multilateral trading systems for that matter.

Parties at TPP negotiations are also APEC members, the same is true of participants of RCEP. It is important that these free trade negotiations integrate with rather than undercut each other, and APEC is expected to play a major coordinating role in this regard.

RECP seems much more Asian, since it doesn't include Russia nor the North and South American countries bordering the Pacific.

just be parroting Obama's enthusiasm for this thing. I am certainly not going to jump on the TPP bandwagon just because it may seem the GOP is sabotaging it. It reeks.
