Either Britain's Telegraph got this really really wrong --

or I did. Was Romney talking about raising the debt ceiling or shutting down the government?

Did I miss this somehow? Has the government been shut down over and over again?

Romney took Obama to task over his deeply partisan and at times petty handling of the shutdown issue, reminding him that the federal government was closed down eight times under Ronald Reagan by a Democrat-controlled House of Representatives, and five times under Jimmy Carter, again by a Democrat-controlled House.

in the past, but it was generally a couple of days at most, and often on weekends. It was Newt who introduced the insane shutdown.

There is so much that is just plain wrong in that article, I don't know where to begin so... I'll just say it's complete bullshit from start to finish.

During the Ford and Carter administrations, funding gaps caused 6 partial shutdowns that affected only the departments of Labor and Health, Education, and Welfare. These lasted from 8 to 18 days and the primary issue of dispute was federal funding for abortion. During the Reagan administration, there were 8 funding gaps with technical shutdowns lasting less than 48 hours or over weekends while spending measures were negotiated. A funding gap during the George H. W. Bush administration also caused a weekend shutdown, resolved late the following Monday.

ETA: From the comments it appears that the guy who wrote that article is on the payroll of the Heritage Foundation.

shutdown, previous shutdowns have affected just one Department or happened on days when few citizens needed to access government services. The only real and damaging shutdowns have been TWO, both by republicans in attempts to extort concessions from Democrat Presidents.
