His compliments come as part of a charm offensive at the hands of the new Iranian leadership, which, in the past month alone, has tweeted New Year’s greetings at the world’s Jews, conducted a friendly interview with NBC’s Ann Curry and facilitated talks between Zarif and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

In addition, Obama and Rouhani spoke by telephone Friday, ending 34 years of estrangement between the bitter rival nations. The unlikely duo reportedly shared a 15-minute chat during which they talked about how they might end a standoff over Iran’s nuclear program.

.....

The diplomatic thaw continued Sunday, despite a cold reception at home.

A group of nearly 75 Iranian hardline demonstrators furious at the new regime’s amicable approach to the U.S., greeted their president with disgust, chucking eggs, and in one case a shoe, at Rouhani as he returned to Iran Saturday from the U.N. General Assembly.

If an unruly crowd theatened the Secretary of State upon his return to Washington, the U.S. Park Police would have charged them with horses, maced the instigators, and dragged the leaders off to a waiting paddy wagon. A "nice, peace-loving, generous people," but beware the men with the guns and body armour.
