It's time for Democrats to embrace the shutdown tactic and raise the stakes

We accepted your sequestration funding levels, and you demanded more! You shut down the government demanding more! More! MOAR!

Well here's some more for you:

How about a 10% raise in SS, that might let Gramma have hamburger helper instead of friskies once a week.

How about we trade the corporate farm subsidy you insisted on for the food stamps you cut to preserve the corporate giveaway.

How about a top tax rate of like 30% that's unavoidable? Or better yet, peg it to where you land on the income distribution scale. You burden is half of your percentile, so if you are at the 50% your tax is 25% If you are at 90% your tax is 45%. No loopholes.

I'm sure we can think up many many more things to add. Maybe add one or two a day.

They should be dictating the terms of re-opening the government. And a tax increase on the richest 1% would be just the bitter medicine the GOP needs to teach them a lesson. Nothing too big just a percent or two but enough to send a message.

I would have loved to have seen Democrats on TV pushing back on the Boehner's negotiation cries by pointing out that we're not asking for universally popular legislation like tax hikes for the top 2%, universal background checks, and closing of tax loopholes before we re-open the government.

I'd like them to be able to end each of those conversations with "But we're not demanding those universally popular legislations. We're simply asking Republicans not to hold the nation hostage with universally unpopular legislation. "

Remind the public which party has populist goals and, at the same time, remind them which party has the adults.

Thu Oct 10, 2013, 09:49 PM
Oct 2013

Obama is totally right to ask for a clean resolution, demanding our own stuff be added on would only feed into the "both sides do it" narrative. I do however think we need to make big demands in the negotations that Obama promised after the government reopens. I think we should ask for taxes on the richest 1% restored to Reagan era levels, add a public option to Obamacare, a new carbon tax to be instituted, an increase in the minimum wage, and a cut to Pentagon spending.

If the Republicans want to negotiate then can not expect that we are only going to negotiate on their wish list, we have to have a wish list of our own to discuss. Again however, that wishlist needs to come after the government is reopened not before. We need a clean CR bill first.
