seeking to minimize the impact of the government shutdown. When private organizations step in to carry out functions of the government, it supports the right wing/libertarian frame of less government.
It also lessens the urgency of ending the shutdown.
I know these are well meaning people, but they are working against the Democratic position. The role and necessity of our government needs to be clear and obvious.

Stepping up and helping is a good thing. ...everyone knows that they are volunteers.

(18,115 posts)I would much prefer aid come from the government. There should be zero need for charities is the US. The government has the ability and access to all the resources necessary to distribute to those in need.

(961 posts)The key here is "well meaning people." Especially when the things they are doing are good deeds. When it comes to doing good deeds, opposing it happening in order to score political points doesn't even need to be on the radar.

If you're looking to increase power and control over others, there are few better ways to do it.

(2,840 posts)That just plays right into the GOP's meme, to wit, that the executive branch is purposefully and callously trying to make this shutdown as painful as it can be for the citizenry and foreclosing other options to lessen that inconvenience.
Democrats should be about helping PEOPLE, no matter the source, not just about helping or protecting government.
