Public to Congress — Raise the debt ceiling

Two-thirds of Americans believe that Congress would cause a “real and serious problem” for the country if it refuses to raise the debt ceiling, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

The public’s concern is more acute that in the summer of 2011, when the Republican-run U.S. House of Representatives precipitated another debt ceiling crisis. At the time, 55 percent of those surveyed agreed that failure to act would constitute a real and serious problem. The figure has risen to 63 percent.

House Republican leaders on Thursday offered a six-week extension of the debt limit, in exchange for negotiations with the White House. But they refused to end the government shutdown. House Speaker John Boehner has refused to allow a “clean” House vote on a government funding bill. It would likely pass, but largely with Democratic votes.
