They understand that, at the last minute, the Democrats will throw them a life raft. Because Democrats love government more than they do.
The President and Harry Reid need to understand the psychology of John Boehner and Mitch McConnell at this crucial time in the "negotiations". The Democrats, according to all the polls, show that the Democrats have the upper hand in this battle. There is no need to surrender anything else to the Republicans.
Also, they love their 3-day weekends. Today is a very important day in resolving this shutdown. Today is not the day to compromise with the extremists that shut down our government. They made their bed so let them sleep in it.
With that said, there is no indication that the President or the Democrats are going to fold on their stand. They need to know that we stand behind them on this issue.

As one Tea Party Congressman said the other day, "We have to get something out of this..."
My guess is that they will get some type of concession.
