I haven't heard anyone bring it up in conversation, but then people may be attempting to avoid talking about politics. Has anyone mentioned the situation to you?

(16,254 posts)everything that was happening while I was gone. We made sure to check out the news each evening and were disappointed to see the US had gone to hell while we weren't keeping track.
While waiting for meals or sitting in groups of people, I only heard one couple mention the shut down in the entire week.
I think it is all so complicated, people don't want to listen to the bickering and lying. However, I felt like I was missing quite a show without my regular DU reads, the newspaper and MSNBC/CSpan.
Maybe I'll live longer without the worry?

(37,383 posts)That is to say, the next one will not be anywhere near as pleasant and fun as the Great Depression. There will be riots, starvation, lots of shootings, very high number of murder-suicides, armed gangs and the like.
It's really something that is simply too horrible to contemplate.
The Teabaggers have absolutely no idea of the likely consequences of their acts.

(14,881 posts)I think 2 checkout clerks were talking about it. Something about food stamp machines going down and cards getting rejected. It sounded like a rolling thing. Sometimes at one time and place, later at another.
And occasionally at the financial call center where I work. People were nervous early last week. Some calls from furloughed workers stopping their systematic investments or cashing out accounts. A couple calls from people looking for financial advice. I expect next week will be bad there...

I told them in no uncertain terms, the Republicans in the Congress have went off the deep end, are holding the nation hostage for extortion purposes and were purposely trying to wreck the economy.
Both of them are ambitious business people, neither one of them rebutted my argument and that in itself was something of a revelation.
Thanks for the thread, hedgehog.
