For some, it is hard to separate the politics from the issue at hand. Some will blame the President, some will blame the Congress. Make no mistake about it Americans. We, as Americans, voted everyone of our elected officials into office. We are ALL responsible for this mess. It is up to us, as Americans to correct this mess. We all have opinions, but we need to drop them and get to the business of fixing what is wrong with our government, not what is wrong with America. America is a great nation with people from all over the world and to blame one party, faction or group over another is counter productive to democracy in a Constitutional republic.
Why were Veterans prevented from visiting their memorials and monuments dedicated in their honor? We don't know. We would really like to know the justification for why this was done. However, to us, it is one issue. Monuments, Memorials and Parks dedicated to honor the sacrifices of our American Veterans and their brothers and sisters-in-arms know NO politics.
~snip~
It is our official position that the purpose of this march and the accompanying rallies is focused on the re-opening of the Veterans memorials and keeping them open. While we understand that a Constitutional republic requires the equilibrium of checks and balances to maintain the democratic process, the memorials, monuments and parks built in honor of Veterans should NEVER be closed, blocked or restricted from use. We take the official position that no government office holder shall have ability to abridge the freedom of access to these hallowed grounds.
We have, as a group, been prevented from certain groups that have piggy-backed off our grassroots efforts, to effectively create a comprehensive media message campaign. We made the mistake of trying to partner with some Washington insiders that thwarted many of our genuine concerns for keeping this apolitical and grassroots. While we support many of those groups common causes for Veterans, we do not support the manner in which they go about it. We chose instead to not incite or create panic.

Supporters,
We came to you a week ago with a pure mission. We opened a Facebook Page and asked you to gather at the World War II Memorial in Washington DC this Sunday to peacefully object to our government closing the monuments to our Veterans.
We have been overwhelmed by your support. Our group all either military brats, veterans or spouses of veterans are amazed at how our numbers have climbed daily!
Our simple message that our National Monuments and parks should always be open for Veterans, regardless of the political climate resonated and we were encouraged to inspire others to hold gatherings at National Monuments throughout the country.
Unfortunately, an idea that started as an unbiased show of support for Veterans has now turned into something political activists are exploiting.
Building off the success we have obtained through community organization and event support, several political groups are piggy-backing off our momentum and have interjected hatred, racism and even the possibility of violence into our efforts. We have also had extremists post threats on the page.
And while we appreciate these third party sites pointing to our event page, we cant condone their messages and believe their motives to be out of sync with ours.
We want to make it clear: Any messages you read on any website at other than our own (http://1mvetmarch.wordpress.com/) or within our Facebook page are not associated with our group or our vision for this event. WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING DONATIONS.

(15,438 posts)1 Million Vet March should give the credit of the Republican Shutdown and politization of their event where it belongs: on Republicans. They should stop the false equivalence that "ALL are responsible for this mess" because that's demonstrably false.
I'm so sick and tired of some American people picking up the Republican meme that "ALL in Congress are to blame" for this 100% Republican Shutdown especially now it's come to light, that one day before the U.S. Gov't was shut down, Republicans had rigged the democratic process purely partisan lines, and passed H.R. 368 that "would stop a majority vote" in the House that could have stopped this Gov't Shutdown.
No, American Vets, this is a purely, 100% Republican fiasco. They should get full credit for it. Democrats have nothing to do with it.

(16,094 posts)But their heads were up their asses!
They allowed themselves to get hijacked by Palin and Cruz...which shows that they had no command structure and that they never really had control of the situation!
And now they want to be forgiven for screwing the pooch...they let it happen, now they can suffer for their stupidity!!!

(8,434 posts)These people do not understand the list of things that our taxes support under the direction of the government.
Close the government and freeze the funding and things must stop.
They do not understand this extremely simple concept.

(15,438 posts)The blatant hypocrisy of these Teabaggers is astounding.
I'm happy our Vets are speaking out about this, but they, too, are laying blame on both parties, and that's just blatantly wrong. Only ONE political party is to blame for this nationwide fiasco, and that's the Republican Party.

(16,350 posts)Memorials are important, of course. But there are real life and death issues that I believe are infinitely more critical than this.
Also, I know their intentions are honorable. Really, I get that. But I reject the false equivalency. It's not just a matter of opinion who is causing the shutdown. It's a matter of fact.

(7,638 posts)In 1987, World War II veteran Roger Durbin approached Representative Marcy Kaptur, a Democrat from Ohio, to ask if a World War II memorial could be constructed. Kaptur introduced the World War II Memorial Act to the House of Representatives as HR 3742 on December 10. The resolution authorized the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) to establish a World War II memorial in "Washington, D.C., or its environs", but the bill was not voted on before the end of the session, so it was not passed. Two more times, in 1989 and 1991, Rep. Kaptur introduced similar legislation, but these bills suffered the same fate as the first, and did not become law.
Oh and you got to love this
On May 12, the Senate also approved the amended bill, and the World War II Memorial Act was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on May 25 of that year, becoming Public Law 103-32.
See the other side didn't care enough to even give you a monument. The same ones that don't give a rats ass now if you can visit it, unless it makes for good film at 11
Do not be their tools.

(9,314 posts)get too excited about a memorial being shut down for awhile. So what? There are people going hungry. Memorials are fine if you really need that kind of thing, but not a top priority as far as I'm concerned. They started this shit and they get to own it.

(7,549 posts)We are too concerned in this country about symbols such as the memorials and even the US Flag itself.
The more important things are 1. People 2. The ideals those symbols were meant to represent.
It is the same thing with the Pledge of Allegiance. Pukes will get their knickers in a knot about talk of taking the "Under God" part out
But they trample all over "the liberty and justice for all part." By saying those words yet not meaning them they in a sense become blasphemers to this country and show themselves as the true hypocrites they are.

(26,045 posts)Why were Veterans prevented from visiting their memorials and monuments dedicated in their honor? We don't know.
Well, I know because the government was forced into shutting down, that's why!
Seriously, whatever damage-control the group might be engaged in today, the fact remains: we've got millions of children of poor families having to go without WIC and HeadStart, we've got 800,000 government employees, many living paycheck-to-paycheck, having to go without those paychecks (in many cases, while still being required to work, and being considered "AWOL" and subject to discipline or even termination if they get sick), and this group thinks the biggest outrage is that they can't visit a flippin' memorial? Give me a break! They're only "distancing themselves" because of the "bad optics" of footage showing members of their group waving Confederate flags while demanding the President of the United States "put down your Quran and come out with your hands up." It's face-saving and nothing more.
