Author Michael Lind seems to think so, according to his editorial for Salon. Lind calls the shutdown one of many race-to-the-bottom strategies by Republicans to appease their base of white, Southern conservatives.
Bloomberg likens attempts to defund Obamacare by House Republicans to modern-day secession.
I think there are continuities, obviously, between the Tea Party today and the longer tradition of Southern politics that dates back upward of two centuries, University of Georgia professor Stephen Mihm said.
