A 22-year-old Nashville, Tenn. man accidentally shot his gun through the floor of his apartment about 11 p.m. on Sunday, hitting a downstairs neighbor who was sleeping in her bed, according to The Tennessean.
The woman was reportedly hit in the shoulder and was rushed to a hospital, where she was in stable condition on Monday morning.
The alleged shooter, David White, told police he was "playing around" with the firearm. He was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, marijuana possession and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.

Hard to make this stuff up..also, hard to believe............How stupid can people be??? Or is that saying too much..It is more about the stupidity of it all, as opposed to the guns......

(38,449 posts)So many people are so stupid with the idea of having a weapon.
.But I want to add, someone will take me down, that is ok, I have seen so many people driving who really don't watch where they are going lately. too busy with their hand held computer or phone. If you have a dangerous thing..my goodness, be careful. I am not here to argue one way or another, how stupid can people be??? Ok, you got to have your toys. Play with them cautiously..Be safe...Why walk down the street holding on to a hand held computer not watching where you are walking...How can you play with a dangerous weapon, and allow it to go off and injure someone in the floor below? ..I just don't know...

(12,072 posts)There are about 600 fatal gun accidents per year, all ages. That is a little bit less than two per day.

(37,748 posts)Maybe write that on a Hallmark and send it to the victims of these accidents and their families to better assuage their pain and grief...?

(12,072 posts)I could make lots of silly emotional appeals too.
Perfect safety is impossible. No matter what we do about anything, there will be accidents. Given the size of our nation, our gun accident rate is quite low, far lower than many other activities.

(23,156 posts)Of course, the gun apologists will show up soon and roundly condemn this man, even though they still feel it's perfectly fine to let anyone have firearms.
I still favor outright confiscation.

But it makes sense in the long run, or so some say.

(7,720 posts)in fact, he possessed the gun illegally. It is illegal to possess a firearm and possess illegal drugs.

Most "stupid gun accidents" never make the news.

(37,748 posts)I imagine many under-educated people believe that needless deaths are little more than a price we pay for easy access to firearms.
GreenStormCloud
(12,072 posts)You aren't truly concerned about the gun accident rate, which has been going down for many years. You simply don't want people to own guns and you seize on the small accident rate as if it were a high rate. If the accident rate were only one per year you would still consider it too high, while ignoring the higher accident rate of other activities.

(54,770 posts)Most gun owners have their stories down if they pull a Zimmerman or something. There was a long thread in the gungeon on what to do right before poster boy Zimmerman shot an unarmed kid.

(34,491 posts)This incident happened to me when I was in my 3rd floor apartment. Luckily the bullet lodged in one of the wall studs in the floor of my bedroom and I was in my kitchen at the time. A sheriff deputy lived underneath and he claimed he was cleaning his gun. SOB almost killed me.

(38,449 posts)So someone is driving and makes a stupid mistake...maybe he/she hits some kind of sign, at a slow rate of speed, and there is some kind of accident with the car alone. So the seat belt helps protect him/her and the airbag goes off. Minor injury. There are few if any kinds of federal protections with guns. I suppose if there were, accidents might be less. I don't know. Maybe there are no kinds of protections that would work....after all, it is a gun.
Jenoch
(7,720 posts)you might be able to claim you were almost hit, but not actually killed.
As it was, you can claim you were in danger of being hit by a round from the off duty deputy.
