Did Cannabis Cure Baby's Inoperable Brain Tumor?

"Medical marijuana is gaining acceptance, but could it even help kids? Dr. William Courtney has seen it happen, and on Friday, told HuffPost Live host Alyona Minkovski about it. Saying he was "quite a skeptic 5 or 6 years ago", Dr. Courtney continued that "my youngest patient is 8 months old, and had a very massive centrally located inoperable brain tumor." The child's father pushed for non-traditional treatment utilizing cannabis.

"They were putting cannabinoid oil on the baby's pacifier twice a day, increasing the dose... And within two months there was a dramatic reduction, enough that the pediatric oncologist allowed them to go ahead with not pursuing traditional therapy."

The tumor was remarkably reduced after eight months of treatment. Dr. Courtney pointed out that the success of the cannabis approach means that "this child, because of that, is not going to have the long-term side effects that would come from a very high dose of chemotherapy or radiation..."

The pool has to be much larger than 1 to come to any meaningful conclusion.

to justify further investigation.

Or, in my experience, over 50 for some "that seems interesting" type comments, and 121 to REALLY get some attention.

And then it gets even more interesting....

prognosis with this kind of tumor would not have been at all promising even with the torture of chemo and radiation.

Could we legalize it then, maybe? What would the pushback from big pharma look like?

and has been for years.

They have former Republican bureaucrats lobbying for them to approve medicine for use in the U.S. The DEA is the hinderance to bringing cannabis onto the American market for treatment of M.S., and as treatment for cancer PAIN, but not cancer, and a few other applications. However, products can also be prescribed "off label" once they are part of the pharmacopeia.

There are scientists here who are working on applications for cannabis in cancer therapy, as well. All of these therapies will eventually be regulated through the FDA and will be made available by big pharma.

Additionally, big pharma is working on cannabis for treatment of diabetes, epilepsy, and for neuropathic pain. (These are all treatments with high levels of CBDs, or non-psychotropic, cannabinoids working together, btw, not single cannabinoids or predominantly THC.)

Ethan Russo, who has done a lot of work in this field said: "The endogenous cannabinoid system acts as a modulator in fine-tuning a lot of these systems, and if something is deranged biochemically in a person's body, it may well be that a cannabinoid system can bring things back into balance."

He is working on treatment related to pain, inflammation, depression, anxiety, addiction, epilepsy, cancer, fungal and bacterial infections (including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).

What Russo and others (including Sativex) have found is that the phyto-cannabinoids work synergistically. The move, in medical studies, is away from THC, or just THC, and toward other cannabinoids, as well as terpenes.

Russo's pov is shared by Melamedes, a biologist leading cannabis research for basal cell carcinomas.

It's an interesting area of study.

since now some states have legalized it. More stories will come forward regarding any curative aspects if indeed it's true.

But that child was under care of a pediatric oncologist who allowed the treatment to go forward after the impressive results. This follows the results from the work in Spain that showed shrinkage of gliomas in patients with inoperable tumors whose traditional treatment had run its course.

The next phase in this will be, and needs to be, better quantification and studies - although in a case like this, you're not going to have people offer up their children for a study.

And this process has been clinically detailed.

It would have to be the height of irony to find out that cannabis is one of the best treatments for certain cancers, after years of demonizing this plant as one with no medicinal value.

There are other clinical studies in the works for other cancers. I hope they get the approval of the DEA to go forward with that work. One is for basal cell carcinomas, using cannabis oil as an ointment.
