A group of Boy Scout leaders is potentially facing felony charges for destroying a rock formation nearly 200 million years old in Emery County.
The trio of men was adventuring in Goblin Valley State Park when they decided to film themselves knocking over one of the formations, known as "goblins."
One man can be seen leveraging himself against a nearby rock and pushing a formation over.
"We have now modified Goblin Valley," the cameraman crows. "A new Goblin Valley exists with, uh, this boulder down here on the bottom. Muscles here pushed it off."
The three laugh, cheer and high five each other.
Utah State Parks officials Thursday were not so amused.
"It is not only wrong, but there will be consequences," said spokesman Eugene Swalberg, noting that a criminal investigation is underway by the State Parks authorities.
"This is highly, highly inappropriate," he said. "This is not what you do at state parks. Its disturbing and upsetting."
Park officials said the rock formation was created back in the Jurassic period nearly 200 million years ago.
Deputy Emery County Attorney Brent Langston said he was aware of the incident, but it hasnt been presented to his office yet for screening for possible charges.

Words cannot describe the stupidity of some people.

(29,414 posts)(just a short bit at the end, but there's a little more when you watch the whole movie)
Obviously, these guys didn't read the Boy Scout Handbook, either. Idiots!

(9,958 posts)but I remember that scene in the trailer. It freaked me out when I was a kid.
One of my favorite bands, Tangerine Dream, did the soundtrack.

(29,414 posts)whether in the theater or at home. Also, see if you can rent the original French movie, Wages of Fear. It's just as harrowing in the suspense. They are transporting nitroglycerin instead of nitro-leaking dynamite as in Sorcerer.
I remember reading that Friedkin liked Tangerine Dream so much that he lamented not using them for The Exorcist. I do love Mike Oldfield, but sometimes wonder how that movie would have been with Tangerine Dream instead
OnyxCollie
(9,958 posts)would be Coil doing the soundtrack to Hellraiser.

(28,552 posts)... (Tangerine Dream and Mike Oldfield) and also of the movie Sorcerer (few movies have had me in knots like that one, almost glad when it was over I think Oldfields music worked in The Exorcist. I cannot see anything by Tangerine Dream (unmelodic doom-laden sound washes) having the same impact. I remember reading his comments about it and thinking he was nuts. Still do.

(29,414 posts)and rightfully so! It's still highly suspenseful after all these years And no CGI necessary!
I'm a fan of both as well, and I can see certain parts of The Exorcist with TD's music, and other parts with the melodic soundscapes of Oldfield. If Christopher Franke had been doing solo work back then, like he did for Babylon 5, I think he could have pulled off a brilliant soundtrack for the movie, too

(44,397 posts)"Glad we did it, wish we wouldnt have done it," he said Thursday of his feelings about the incident.
Swalberg said its rare for tourists to destroy natural formations.
"Some little kid was about ready to walk down here and die and Glenn saved his life by getting the boulder out of the way," the cameraman says. "So its all about saving lives here at Goblin Valley."

(650 posts)As long as I am assured that I can place those three fat-asses in the LZ and re-create the scene.
Fuck those shits, they should be staked to the ground at the site and left for example.

(15,472 posts)They've eroded in the last few million years to be like that, and the erosion continues. A lot have already fallen by themselves.
The one knocked over may have stood for another few years at most or more than 100k years, but in the end, erosion wins. The Himalayas will be plains or sea beds, and some other currently flat portion will soar to 8000 feet or more.
Rebuilding that hoodoo would be like rebuilding the Old Man of the Mountain in New Hampshire. Or the Piedra movediza in Buenos Aires (which they actually did do, entirely for reasons of money).
It's the kind of thing that is really arch-conservative. What is must endure forever, however much things may naturally change, because, dammit, things aren't allowed to change on our watch. For that reason many assume that North America was really wild when the Europeans arrived, because in the 1900s the "wildnerness" areas were really wild (even if in more than a few cases they were farmland in the 1800s). In more than a few cases, we struggle to "preserve" conditions that we only recently created but have romanticized.
That's some serious word salad.

These dudes need to be punished. In no universe I'm aware of would this be considered acceptable behavior.

Mountains erode naturally from wind&weather. Is it okay to blow them up, so their interiors can be mined?
The moon erodes naturally from solar wind. Let's nuke the shape of a penis into its surface.

(354 posts)At the tail end of this FOX news report, the anchor brought up the fact that the idiot who pushed the rock over, had just last month filed a personal injury lawsuit stemming from a 2009 car crash. IMHO if he is in good enough shape to push & topple that formation, it seems to me he could be lying about any current injury he is dealing with. Because it sure doesn't look like he is hurting in the video.
Oh my back hurts! Oh my arms hurt! Oh I am going to push over this several hundred pound rock formation. What a crock of ****.
