http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/10/17/2789931/threat-women-texas/So the gist of it is that the voter ID law requires that proof of citizenship have your CURRENT name, and many women change their names when they marry, and many of them don't have proof of citizenship with their married name.

(45,806 posts)I have to have more than that just to get an ID card from the state drivers license guys here in GA. My complaint is that they mandate that you produce all of those things EVERY TIME your license or ID expires and you need a new one. What the hell do they think happens to you in those 10 years? Do you suddenly become a citizen of Mexico or something?

(22,336 posts)Constituents must show original documents verifying legal proof of a name change, whether it is a marriage license, divorce decree, or court ordered change they are prevented from using photocopies. In the absence of original documents, voters must pay a minimum of $20 to receive new copies. Due to inflexible work schedules and travel expenses, voters often opt to have their documents mailed, incurring additional costs.
Taken together, these obstacles to proving a legal name change will eliminate a large pool of women from the states electorate, as many will face time and financial constraints that will prohibit them from securing new credentials. On the other hand, the majority of men eligible to vote will not encounter the same difficulties, because they do not typically modify their names when married.

(4,879 posts)I've been registered to vote in Texas for over forty years.
My birth certificate, drivers license and voters card, all have different names.
I have no idea what this is going to cost me to continue to cast my vote.
