By Julie Anderson

The discovery of a small “shard” of plastic in beef being served to Thayer Central Community Schools students earlier this week prompted an immediate switch to cold-cut sandwiches and a followup letter to alert parents.

Drew Harris, superintendent of the Thayer Central school district in Hebron, Neb., said servers were about a third of the way through serving a lunch of Philly steak sandwiches Tuesday when one server found the piece, which was less than a quarter of an inch long and very narrow.

About 100 students already had been served. Kitchen staff quickly switched to sandwiches and served the rest of the students.

Harris said his staff checked with students. None reported finding plastic in their food and none have reported becoming ill. They also checked through the remaining beef but found no traces of it.

including that I'm not sure why this would be of interest to anyone much more than 10 miles away from Hebron.

It seems to have been caught by a server before even a quarter inch piece of plastic in a prepared sandwich was served.

That may call for inspection of the rest of the lot, but an piece of plastic could come from any number of places, including a cooking implement.

I personally shudder to think of what their idea of a "Philly" sandwich might be. I've seen horrible interpretations of them in various places outside of the greater Philadelphia region.

so to speak, and I don't know that I could tell you what they might consider a "Philly."

It was just the most visible. School lunch programs are kind of notorious for being allowed to use sub-quality materials.
