The 16-day shutdown of the federal government has finally come to an end, but many Americans are still furious about what they perceive as a GOP-sponsored gambit to defund the Affordable Care Act.
One outlet for that fury is a petition from the progressive MoveOn.org that calls for the U.S. Department of Justice to arrest and try Republican leaders, including House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (Va.) and House Speaker John Boehner (Ohio), for "the crime of seditious conspiracy against the United States of America."
The petition argues that "the House GOP leadership's use of the Hastert Rule and H. Res 368 to shut down the government and threaten the US economy with default is an attempt to extort the United States government into altering or abolishing the Affordable Care Act, and thus, is self-evidently a seditious conspiracy." (The U.S. Code defines "seditious conspiracy" in part as any conspiracy "to oppose by force the authority [of the U.S. government], or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States."
With more than 21,000 signatures to date, the petition reflects a wider revulsion over the government's costly political meltdown -- which, among other consequences, resulted in furloughs for 800,000 federal workers, the shuttering of some Head Start programs, the suspension of federal health and safety inspections, and the loss of $24 billion in economic activity.

(6,943 posts)Sedition is even more difficult to prove than is treason. As satisfying and enjoyable as the spectacle might be, it's a virtual certainty that the judge would enter a judgment of acquittal at the end of the government's case.

(6,943 posts)That's an essential element of the crime.

(1,384 posts)Are unhelpful IMO. It makes our side seem extreme and I would rather the public stay focused on the extremism of the right. If nobody went to jail for lying us into Iraq you know damn well nothing will come of this.

(455 posts)it also makes the GOP / Tea Party action look less extreme and more like "business as usual."
Of course it will most likely go nowhere, but who cares? It reinforces the correct perception that TP is criminally unfit to govern.

(36,091 posts)Not hating; just questioning why some legal team shouldn't file charges. Do politicians enjoy immunity from public sedition suits?

(14,910 posts)I will instead work steadily forward to ensure that those responsible are removed from office in a method that has proven much more effective in an effort that espouses democratic and progressive foundations: at the polls.

(1,309 posts)Everyday I get something from a well respected and motivated civic organization to take part in some march, gather for a protest, write a letter, sign petitions, collect signatures, make phone calls to voters, call my representatives etc. , But this is often futile. A famous poet wrote that evil grows many branches and to destroy it , we must not just hack at the branches but attack the root.
Today we can argue that there are numerous roots supporting he evil,. Is it Gerrymandering, by the parties? Is it voters suppression by limiting access to the polls? Is it voter disenfranchisement by requiring the old , the poor, and the handicapped to take steps such as getting voter identification? Is it not allowing easy access to the polls for the working poor? Is it the lack of Journalistic integrity which contributes to an unaware or mislead electorate? Is it corporate money and the money of millionaires and billionaires bribing hated plutocracy which runs our government and our economy and many more around the world, our politiicans to ignore the needs of the people whether it be by direct contribution, idea selling, or promises to oppose them. It is all of these things and they have synergistically led to an antidemocratic plutocracy which runs our government, our economy and many other government and economies around the world.
But we can beat this evil if we cut off its roots. The cutting of just one root weakens the foundation because it weakens the other roots too. For example if we get rid of Gerrymandering , we weaken the ability of money to bribe our officials and make them accountable for other issues. Of the roots, fighting Gerrymandering is the best first step and we must fight it in order to use the polls.
