Naked Florida Man Shot and Killed by Passing Motorist After Having His Clothes Stolen

The family of a Florida man is searching for answers after he was shot by a passing motorist while running home naked because his clothes had been stolen while at the beach.

Jandei Cherry, who The Orlando Sentinel described as a 22-year-old "free-spirited musician and doting father," had decided to run home naked last week after a friend took off with his clothes and skateboard.

Hollywood police said that somewhere along the less than 10-mile journey back to his home, a passing motorist stopped to investigate why a nude man was running down the street. Police believed that a conflict with the motorist resulted in Cherry being fatally shot.

"It is not normal for someone to be running naked down Hollywood Boulevard," Hollywood police Lt. Osvaldo Perez explained. "I think that's what spiked the other guy's attention."

As of Monday, Laguerre had not been charged for shooting the 22-year-old father.

Why does Florida produce so much weird news? Our experts explain.

<snip>

See, that’s the thing about Florida. It’s not that we have a lock on all the weirdness. Human nature guarantees that weird things can happen anywhere. What sets Florida apart is that it produces more weird news than anywhere else, and our weird news tends to be weirder than anyone else's. No other state is going to have a guy who faked a python rescue. No sir.

That’s why, in 2001, administrators for the snarky website Fark.com approved a tag for news items from Florida, the only state so honored. “Other states have odd stories come out of them, but no state can challenge Florida,” a Fark.com administrator said in 2011. “It’s the heavyweight champion of weirdness.”

How did Florida become the Go-To State for Weird? I consulted a number of experts, including historian Gary Mormino, author of Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams. Some folks think the rise of weirdness in Florida started with the 2000 presidential election, which guaranteed no parent would ever again name a newborn boy Chad. But Mormino contends it began long before that, as far back as the 1920s when unscrupulous hucksters were pulling wacky stunts to sell swampland to Yankees. The national news first began noticing this aspect of Florida in the 1980s, when cocaine cowboys were tearing up South Florida and Time magazine’s cover asked if the state was “Paradise Lost?” Now we’ve got all the aggregators jumping on the Florida weird-news bandwagon, collecting clicks with our craziness. How does Florida maintain this constant flow of cuckoo? A few factors combine to help explain it:

I used to go to 1980s Miami in the winter every year for excitement.

It reminded me of Saigon right before Tet 1968

Hardly anyone you would run into spoke English

The homeless living under free ways in card board boxes

Rampant public urination by numerous intoxicated men and women

Every other car was either a Mercedes, Rolls, Ferrari or other extreme luxury car.

The rest of the cars were beat up junkers, that smoked oil and barely ran

It was warm and humid in the morning and a fog of exhaust choked the city

The smell of dead fish and rotting garbage washing up on shore

Boats touting gambling crowding the waterfront

Palm trees swaying in the Breeze

From the open hotel window at night the sound of Gunfire emanated from Liberty City

Pan handlers and squeegee men prowling the streets

The only thing missing were sand bag barriers in front of stores, hotels and restaurants

It was inexpensive if one was careful, exciting, unexpectedly dangerous and a reminder of my adventurous days of fighting for freedom in a foreign land and helping eliminate Kommunists and other anti-democratic peasants.

As I became older Miami became much more expensive and almost tediously going upscale for the uber rich

To label the residents of one particular state as being "f*****d up" is NOTHING short of bigotry.

I agree - there are some bizarre stories emanating from my state. But we could certainly start a "column of weird news" from each state in the U.S. No one is immune.

I live here but I will also tell you that it really does seem like all the nuts roll down to Florida.

Mostly I take solace in the fact that by the time most of these nuts roll down here from some other place they are old and won't be here long - and at least in Florida most of the old south mind set racists that didn't roll in from other places are dying off at a much faster rate then they can be replaced.

Personally, I always like the thought of selling them some land in the everglades and let all the alligators and non-native snakes eat them.

Rural most every where in the US is where you find a good chunk of the bagger, racist, good christan, bigot types. And we got a lot of rural areas down here. But the stories do seem more crazy when they come from Florida. But I still like it here and I am not moving.

The act of investigation was made in good faith and in no way should take away his legal protections.

but my first thought would be that the naked person had been a victim of some sort and needed the police's help. I can't imagine why anyone would stop a car and shoot someone who obviously had no weapon.

He had to die because he was naked? Why can't a person just call the police instead of shooting someone when they aren't in obvious danger? Guns seem to make too many people think that they should try to control any situation they see whether it is a threat to them or not.

between the two men that resulted in the shooting. There's very little information in the article. Jandei Cherry was likely pretty pissed off when the guy stopped.

In a phone call last week, Cherry said that friend told her that he and Jandei ended up at the beach after getting off work late Saturday.

They argued and Jandei punched him in the face, the friend told her. The friend then took off with Jandei's clothes and skateboard, he told her.

Contacted by phone Monday, that friend declined comment.

Unless the cops see a reason to press charges, we will probably not get much more information on this story.

Oct 2013

If some guy is running down the street naked and you are in your car....

WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU GO CONFRONT HIM?

You are safe. He is doing nothing to you, and not doing any physical harm to anyone else. Call the police, and let them sort it out.

That is why this driver is monumentally stupid, and demonstrates that he can not handle owning a weapon. But the same culture that produces SYG laws says that he's gotta be a big man and intervene in everyone else's business, just in case.

Fri Oct 18, 2013, 01:42 PM

or even stop them. Growing up in NYC and riding subways, I have seen people walking around with snakes around their necks, a birdcage with a parrot inside on top of his head, and a man in a pink tutu, crown on his head, dancing through subway cars. That is all I can think of off the top of my head right now. Sure there were others. Nobody confronted them, or shot them. You look the other way. Who are they hurting??????

In Florida, if some person doesn't like you or what you are doing, they feel it is their right as a gunner, to shoot, and use the SYG as an excuse that their lives were threatened.

when I read, "It is not normal for someone to be running naked down Hollywood Boulevard" I thought, "Sure it is!" But then again, I was going by California standards.

Seriously, there are too many Gomers who envision themselves as modern-day Rambos who own guns and are just itching to find any excuse to use them. Florida seems to accept any old excuse. "He's lookin' at me!" BLAM!

Fri Oct 18, 2013, 11:00 AM
Oct 2013

I'd stop and ask him what was going on. Then, I'd take off my shirt and give it to him to tie around his waist and give him a ride to wherever it was that he was going. I'd do the same for a naked woman, too.

I can't think of any other action that would be appropriate. I wouldn't call the cops. I'd stop and see what I could do to help. Only if the person seemed to be mentally ill or otherwise impaired would I call the cops.

Just help.

http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2013-10-16/news/fl-naked-man-search-warrant-20131016_1_search-warrant-naked-man-chevy-impala

Laguerre told police he was driving a Chevy Impala with a female friend when he spotted a naked man and turned around, according to a search warrant filed in Broward Circuit Court.

He told police he rolled down his window "and asked the male if he was OK."

Laguerre told police he asked several times, and then Cherry grabbed the window. "Laguerre attempted to raise the window but was unable to because the male [Cherry] was pulling on it."

According to the documents, Laguerre said Cherry then reached into his car and grabbed his shoulder. Laguerre reached into his console, grabbed a Glock 9 mm handgun and fired. The round shattered the window. He drove away, called a friend and then called his step-father who told him to call 911.

A passing police sergeant noticed Cherry on the ground and stopped to help. He said Cherry was awake and talking. Laguerre returned to the scene. His passenger corroborated his story and said she recorded some of the incident on her cellphone.
