Mississippi state Sen. Chris McDaniel announced Thursday afternoon that he will challenge six-term Sen. Thad Cochran, potentially setting up a dynamic and divisive GOP primary in the Magnolia State in 2014.
McDaniel kicks off his bid with support from several national conservative groups, including the Club for Growth, Senate Conservatives Fund and the Madison Project.
The seat is safely in GOP hands, but Cochran is still mum on whether he will seek re-election. Hes said he will make a decision by the end of the year. A longtime appropriator, Cochran has leveraged his seniority to bring home funds for decades.
Mississippis economy relies heavily on federal funds thanks in part to the states high poverty level. A handful of Republicans noted last month that the delegation is young and the hope is that Cochran does not leave office until the younger members earn seniority in the House and Senate.

(16,079 posts)If the Tea Bagger wins the first thing he'll do is introduce a bill to cut funding to all the poverty programs in his state...that way those that vote for him will be proud of his accomplishments on their behalf...as they either go hungry or start eating each other!!!

(39,961 posts)and he goes around the bend after winning the primary like the Witch or Angle or the chickens for checkups woman. I know there were a few others. They were supposedly "safe Republican" seats, too, but they amped up the crazy past the point where even Republicans couldn't stomach voting for them.
We could see something similar. Hope springs eternal!
Oh and there was that one in Alaska that won on a write in vote. That tells you how deeply distrustful many people are of the teahadists, even in strongly conservative states.

(31,706 posts)...and not only lose the Senate but the House as well. I hope he and his goons primary every rushpublican that voted for the CR...let the battle be expensive and tiring. It'll create a lot of opportunities for Democrats in "safe" seats as whomever survives those primaries will be a weak general election candidate with a depressed base. The problem next year may not be Democrats staying home but rushpublicans!!!

(39,961 posts)It will give me an opportunity to vote against him AND Thad Cochran. The seat is pretty safe unless they get a nut job out of the primary and it blows up in their faces. Remember Sharon Angle and the witch woman whose name I can't remember (but I do remember "I'm not a witch) or the chickens for checkups woman? Those seats were supposedly destined to be Republicans but in the race to be crazier than thou with their opponents left sane people dumbfounded as to how they managed to get out of the asylum and voted against them or didn't vote!

(16,846 posts)voters will already have heard of him and know his positions. Cochran is going to beat him badly, though, and might just embarrass him so much that it will be hard for him to live down the loss. I fucking hope so. We have too many teabaggers in this state already.
