Who is this guy on Morning Shmoe? Father O'Brien, saying we need more prayer in government, in schools, in our businesses, because it's so difficult to "find time to pray." Hey, father...if you're driving to work, alone in you car...PRAY. If you're sitting at your desk at work, PRAY. Why do you have to bring everyone else into it? Pray, or don't pray. I'm not a prayer guy, why do I need to deal with your prayer circle at my place of work or at a basketball game, etc? If you want to pray, PRAY. Do you need a group to validate it for you?

(13,466 posts)People love to use the "we need prayer in schools etc.." as a cop out on improving society because that might involve money or actual effort.
They also fully expect those prayers be done in a way their particular faith would see fit, in other words, indoctrination.

"I don't want some liberal atheist union school teacher leading my kids in prayer. I want to pick so I can make sure that the only prayers my kids hear are the right ones. I don't want them upsetting their God Zeus."

It's like when a town is ripped apart by a tornado and someone survives..."IT'S A MIRACLE!" Actually, no...it's not a miracle. Seems to me a loving God wouldn't have ripped your town apart with a tornado in the first place. Maybe if you'd been praying at the school basketball game...
I just don't get it.

(15,384 posts)You have to go and get a bunch more people, get a news crew (hopefully TV but print media will do in a pinch), dress up in your nicest suit, find a photogenic place to pray in front of, practice your solemn, pious face, warm up your speaking voice, etc.
IT'S HARD WORK!

------------------------
Matthew 6:1-34 ESV
Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. ...
Matthew 6:6 ESV
But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Matthew 6:5 ESV
And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
Matthew 6 ESV
And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

(5,739 posts)My lord, what is the point of praying if everyone can't see you do it and know how holy and righteous you are?
It isn't like jesus told people to pray in their own home or that showing off your prayer is the opposite of being a good christian.

He's free to pray his head off. Prayer is between a prayer and his god, not for show or bragging rights.
