Republican apologizes for berating park ranger (and more effects of GOP shutdown of Government)

Neugebauer apologizes for berating park ranger at WWII Memorial

By Mario Trujillo

Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-Texas) apologized Thursday for scolding a park ranger over keeping the World War II Memorial closed during the government shutdown.

In a letter to the National Park Service, Neugebauer said he became upset when he saw some veterans being barred from the memorial and inappropriately got “caught up in the emotion of that moment.”

“While I do feel strongly about allowing our veterans access to the national memorials, I’m sorry for the way I spoke, not only because I put the Ranger on duty in an uncomfortable position, but also because my remarks were not an accurate reflection of the regard I have for the Park Service,” he said in the letter addressed to the park director.

Neugebauer faced sharp criticism for an incident at the World War II Memorial two days into the government shut down. Confronting a female ranger, he said: “The Park Service should be ashamed of themselves” for denying people access.

"I'm not ashamed," the ranger replied.

"You should be," Neugebauer responded.

U.S. cancels October crop report, first miss in 147 years

By Charles Abbott

(Reuters) - The U.S. government canceled its monthly report on grain and cotton production on Thursday for the first time since reporting began in 1866 and said it will not estimate U.S. or world crop production until early November.

Cancellation of the October report means the first harvest-time estimate of U.S. crops will be November 8. The production report and companion data on crops worldwide are the U.S. Agriculture Department's premiere reports.

They attract a worldwide audience and frequently move commodity prices - and with the gap of an additional month, potentially more so than usual.

The widely followed USDA reports were the biggest immediate casualties of the 17-day government shutdown. Officials were also deciding on Thursday whether to issue an overdue report on the U.S. inflation rate.

sure there were a few of them "blocking" his way, as well. Give her a bonus for hazard pay. She was working and not even sure if she would be paid thanks to these arses.

A further note, he is worth somewhere between $6-20 million. No wonder he doesn't think someone's income from real work is not important...he doesn't need his measly $175,000 taxpayer-funded salary.

She didn't want a personal apology, probably because she loathes the guy and didn't want to be a prop for his apology publicity stunt. She wouldn't even give him her address. It appears she directed the Representative to send his letter to the head of the Park Service.

he must be feeling some heat. The only reason he would apologize would be to save his ass. Typical.

Not individually, of course. But it would have added a small bit to the stack that his staffers in Abilene probably had to deal with, and that sort of thing gets passed on.

If nothing else, it was worth 46 cents to me just to spell out in no uncertain terms what an ass I think he is.
