In a sharply worded ruling, a federal judge in Montana said Tuesday that documents found inside a Colorado meth house pointing to possible election law violations will not be returned to the couple claiming the papers were stolen from one of their cars.
Instead, the thousands of pages will remain where they are - with a federal grand jury in Montana, investigating the dark money group American Tradition Partnership, once known as Western Tradition Partnership, or WTP.
The documents, detailed last fall in a Frontline documentary and in ProPublica coverage, point to possible illegal coordination between candidates and WTP, which since 2008 has worked to replace moderate Republicans with more conservative candidates in both Montana and Colorado. The documents, including a folder labeled Montana $ Bomb, provided the first real glimpse inside a dark money group. Such so-called social welfare nonprofits, which have poured more than $350 million into federal election ads in recent years, dont have to disclose their donors.
Conservative political consultant Christian LeFer, a former WTP official, and his wife, Allison LeFer, who helped run the couples printing shop, sued Montanas former Commissioner of Political Practices Jim Murry and the state of Montana to recover the documents.

(53,661 posts)They filled up the post boxes in my blue state, blue district, with a lot of lying promotions for baggers running. And attacks on Democratic candidates.
All of them were mailed from some town in MT, no return address, no organization, just the town name. So mad I cursed at the mail box.
There is nothing too low, including running with made up party names, with dog whistles for those who know them.
Even had a bagger run as a Democrat in a district that was blue, planned to change to GOP as soon as got in office.

How has the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision changed campaigns in America? Ask Montana, which has tried to challenge the ruling in court, is investigating alleged campaign abuses and is playing host to a bitter race that could decide control of the U.S. Senate.

(33,032 posts)HELENA In far-reaching decisions Wednesday, Montanas top political cop said
a prominent dark money group and similar groups appear to have broken state
campaign laws when they coordinated mailers promoting or attacking candidates
in a 2010 legislative primary election.
The rulings from Commissioner of Political Practices Jonathan Motl also said evidence
shows former state Rep. Dan Kennedy, a Laurel Republican, accepted illegal contributions
from the same groups and failed to properly report those donations.
Motl said the rulings send a message to Montana candidates and groups that would flout
state disclosure laws, warning they must fully report spending and donations for
campaign-related activity.
He advised candidates to avoid such activity in the 2014 campaign.

Commissioner: Evidence of illegal 'dark money'
Montana's commissioner of political practice said Wednesday that he found evidence
of so-called dark money groups illegally coordinating spending with at least one candidate.
Jonathan Motl warned potential 2014 candidates to not accept aid from third-party
groups without paying for and disclosing the help. Penalties, under state law, could
include fines _ and even removal from office or future ballots. The cases shed more
light on angry disputes over anonymous spending in Montana races that has fractured
the Republican legislative caucus, led to a number of legal battles over state laws and
attracted the attention of a federal grand jury.
Motl released five decisions siding with a former Republican House candidate in Billings,
Debra Bonogofsky. She alleged former state Rep. Dan Kennedy, also a Republican,
coordinated mailers in 2010 to avoid campaign finance laws.
The commissioner said the investigation will now expand to other 2010 and 2012
legislative candidates, because one Bonogofsky complaint widely sought relief on
behalf of all other candidates who were unfairly targeted by unreported spending.

(7,403 posts)That the documents found at the meth house were stolen from their car. What the article doesn't say is whether this claim was made before or after they were found at the meth house. If before it could have merit but if afterwards it smells to high heaven. Also, what possible use could the meth house have for retaining those documents and since the obvious answer is none it really detracts from the believability of the claim.
